AS ECONOMIC March Madness gripped Washington, there was the President of the United States...revealing his NCAA picks to ESPN...(and)...on "The Tonight Show," the first such guest spot by a sitting commander in chief...The President's media-savvy handlers...clearly are banking on a bold strategy: Flood the zone with their magnetic and talented boss, dominate coverage and position themselves to win the big policy battles ahead. Was this writer born yesterday? That's precisely the strategy that got Obama INTO the White House!
Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski, whose team didn't make Obama's Final Four, said what many Americans were probably thinking: "As much as I respect what he's doing, really, the economy is something that he should focus on, probably more than the brackets."I believe that what many Americans are thinking is: "Mike Krzyzewski has embarrassed himself, his team, and his school with his whiny sore loser talk."
No typical pol, (Obama) has built-in gravitas and lacks the rub-you-the-wrong-way tics that plague so many people in public life, like John Kerry, George Bush and Al Gore.Throw in Karl Rove or Dick Cheney, and you've got fairness and balance--both literally and politically.
If you're going to be President of a united America, as Obama has repeatedly pledged to be, appearing on ESPN and Jay Leno may be savvy in a new media world - where overexposure is the rule. But...(a)t some point soon, Obama will start to get the blame for the faltering economy, the bailout, the bloody war in Afghanistan and all the rest...Get the blame from whom--an "old media" bent on revenge for Obama's sidestepping them?
When that happens, more and more Americans will start to question...(him)...Some will recall the image of Obama filling out the bracket or yukking it up with Jay.Fortunately, most will also remember Bush looking for WMDs under his desk and celebrating McCain's birthday while New Orleans drowned.
Then there's the risk that Obama runs, small but real, of making a big mistake each and every time he exposes himself. That's not a reason to hide, but it explains why Presidents often pick their appearances very carefully. He's made only small mistakes so far. And as I said, he picked his appearances carefully enough to get elected, which I think is an indication that people not only like them but have come to expect them. But let's cut to the chase, shall we? Your real problem is that you resent Obama being so successful without you--he's also running the "risk" of becoming popular enough to either pick his own media favorites (like calling on the Huffington Post at the last TV presser) or dispose of you altogether. After eight years of acting as Bush's gatekeepers and interpreters, you MSM-ers are suddenly an endangered species. And speaking of pressers, maybe that would solve your problem--if Obama is getting too overexposed, maybe press conferences is what he ought to stop doing!
