we have a generator so it is running things for a while, but it is going to get mighty cold in our home tonight with no heat

1. Sorry to hear that.
Glad you have a generator though.

You may want to try snuggling up with each other too.

Sharing body heat is an old camping trick.

Share the love.

And best of luck.

2. Bundle up, wherever you are. Tuck the children in bed with you.
:grouphug: Stay safe.

4. A Transfer Switch Would Let You Run Your Furnace off the Genny
(assuming you don't have electric heat, anyway).

We get fairly frequent power failures out here, so we got a transfer switch installed so we can run anything in the house off the generator except the electric stove and electric dryer.
That means we can keep the heat going.

7. Why would it? Global warming causes *extremes* of weather.

8. get out all the blankets, find the earmuffs and mittens, winter coats & scarfs
grab towels and throw rugs and block off window and door leaks

if you're up candles (in those glass jars) give off a bit of warmth and light (at least i think a bunch of them burning will warm up a room a bit--that is why i stopped burning them in the summer--felt like they made the surroundings too uncomfortably warm)

best of luck with this. what a drag. sorry to hear it.

12. Catastrophic ice storms didn't happen often at ALL in the Midwest before the last 15 years or so.
When we grew up, ice loading the trees and toppling them over onto electric lines, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without heat in the winter just didn't happen.

Now we have far more tornadoes to duck, and devastating, long term power loss every year to fear.

17. I was 6
and living in Strafford, Missouri. I remember that we spent an entire month out of school. It got down to -20. You would walk out side and it would just sting you. You could spit and it would be frozen before it hit the sidewalk.
