TWO THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED AND TWENTY THREE sq. ft. with THREE bathrooms and FOUR bedrooms. That is nearly THREE of my apartment (or a basketball court).

Amazing.

27. Or South Carolina....
For that kind of money, depending on the location, you can get a house at least that big, with all the latest bells and whistles, along with at least an acre or two of land. And, compared to most of the country, the property taxes are next to nothing. The only problem is that you'll also get a lunatic governor, two bat-shit-crazy Senators, and probably lunatic local, state, and federal representatives. And, lots of friendly people coming to your door trying to get you to join their social club church.

28. I looked up to see what the house I owned there 20 years ago was worth now
Edited on Sun Mar-29-09 12:43 PM by NNN0LHI
It was worth about the same as I sold it for in 1989.

Glad I moved.

2. Had one here in Ohio (Cambridge) 10,000 sq ft for same price
The Gross Mansion. I went to see it twice just because it was so cool.

The YMCA owned and was building a new place - wanted to tear it down and city said no, so they were selling cheap. Last I heard it was still for sale (The huge victorian place across the st was 500k, but was completely remodeled).

When I get bored I look at cool places to buy in small towns here, some awesome huge places cheap.

3. If my Mom wasn't ill or had passed, I'd be gone from here I think
You pay mortgage money to rent apartments in NJ, and even though I have been here all of my life, it costs too damn much.

13. I'm in a similar situation
It's expensive to live here in MA as well. I could get a nice house in MN for what I paid for my little 2-bdrm condo. But I've got an elderly, disabled mother who depends on me helping her out. So I'll be here for a while.

4. It looks lonely.
I wonder how the neighbors are. My neighbors are all friends.

I bet there's not too many front porch ukulele jams over there...I think I'll stay home.

32. The neighbors are too close.
If I could live anywhere I wanted, it would be right smack in the center of a section of land, surrounded by miles of national forest.

I don't want to see neighbors, hear neighbors, see their lights or allow their lights to dim the stars, or be somewhere that they can approach me.

There is no such thing as "lonely," lol.

Like Pecos Bill's father, I have a "powerful fear of being hemmed in by neighbors." When some neighbors moved in right next door 200 miles away, he said, "If there's one thing I can't stand, its being cramped by squatters."

The HOUSE doesn't need to be more than a little cottage, as long as the space around the house is adequate. ;)

I have 3 nice neighbors on my little private road currently. We respect each other's privacy, but since the neighbors to the north tore down their old trailer and built a new house, I can see the house and the lights a few acres away from my bedroom window.

That, and he runs a little bobcat whose reverse warning beep can be heard constantly beeping whenever the weather is decent.

:(

Other than endless snow, sub-zero temperatures and the mosquito season.

Of course we liked it better when even the Republican politicians tended to be a bit progressive.

8. That's acutally a lower price for that area
(it's about 3 miles from my cheesy little apartment). I read the description and see it was built in 1952 and still has an unfinished basement - which helps explain the "lower" cost.

I don't need no cheesy finished basement.

So is it a nice area, or typical of all Realtors, make a sow look like a silk purse?

12. It's all coming down now.
My 2,000 sq foot home went up ridiculously to half a million (from the high 200,000s) and has bounced back down to that level over the past five years.

And I can't even guess what my Los Angeles condo would have been worth if I'd kept it. And I bet it is worth dogshit now.

14. In detroit:

$179,000 ($763 per month)

4 Bed, 3.5 Bath | 5,064 Sq Ft

Funny thing - I meant to search on houses with a max price of 200,000 - and accidentally searched on the max price of 200 - but still came up with a hit.

$285k would buy a very nice house in many parts of the metro.

30. I just found out my brother's brother in law lost his house, which they'd been renting,
after not being able to make the mortgage payments. He had what used to be a good job selling medical equipment, but, guess what.....

they're moving into another rental, as the new owners are kicking them out of the house they used to own.

his wife's sister is moving in with my brother, as she lost her house last summer, and has nowhere else to live, after losing her downtown Chicago apt. she found a job in a Milwaukee bar.

condo neighbor is being sued by the association for lack of association fees, but just found a job in South Carolina. Is trying to sell her place here, but no luck so far.

Several teachers at my school have had their husbands get laid off in the last six months (one of whom just had her first child)

other than that, things are swell

anecdotal, but what's going to happen down the road?

31. The house is in Bloomington, a southern suburb of Minneapolis
housing is cheaper even further outside the metro area, that house is the size of ours, and we paid half of that but we live way outside of Minneapolis
