1. The old tobacco, the real tobacco, sometimes called Indian Tobacco
Edited on Sun Mar-29-09 02:30 PM by SpiralHawk
is the Chief of the herbs. Big Medicine, if used with knowledge for communication and healing. Big curse, if used with addictive compulsion.

The real mysteries of tobacco are many and marvelous.

2. Great question
We were wondering the same thing. Can't see why it would be illegal, since it is a legal product, but the USDA has lots of business-friendly regs we don't know about...

4. When tobacco is outlawed
Only corporate criminal pimps will have tobacco -- for sale.

3. Sort of depends on how big your lawn is
I think in most states, growing tobacco for personal use is fairly unregulated. The laws come into play if you try to sell it. Kind of like the homebrewing laws.

17. I bookmarked that link earlier

I'm lucky enough to have a good sized yard and it's a fairly rural, libertarian area. I'm pretty sure I could grow enough to cover my needs for at least a few months. That's just that much less grass to cut.

edit to add: I was thinking of Standard Burly and/or Virginia Gold. They sound like a good mix for the region and a good taste for cigarettes.

7. Unless There's a State Law that prohibits it,
the power to punish people growing tobacco is not authorized in the constitution, so the federal shouldn't be allowed to punish you.

8. Its legal but I doubt it will taste like a Marlboro
Up to a tenth of an acre is allowed for personal use I believe.

20. 5-6 years of climate controlled aging.. Yikes!
And none of these guide ever say how to shred it after curing.

Sound like a major PITA.

I prefer flowering tobacco, nicotiana, which has extremely fragrant flowers in a wide variety of colors.

11. It would probably be healthier,
because it seems as though the chemicals in the tobacco are responsible for cancer.

12. You can grow tobacco anywhere you want. You can dry it and use it too. Can't sell it though.

14. I've grown it in my herb garden.
Personally, I prefer flowering tobacco to nicotiana tobaccum. It CAN be smoked, although I don't know if you'd get the effect you are looking for.

15. I don't see how it would be different from growing any other legal substance in a garden.

Long as you don't sell or give it to minors.

16. That is some nasty shit.
I worked on a tobacco farm, and you get tar gum and everything on you. Plus you better learn how to dry it properly or you will end up with a moldy mess. I have smoked dried tobacco when it has been cured. Not.the.same.

18. God, I hope so
I have it popping up by it self everywhere. I don't use it for any more than ornamental, as the big Green leaves give a tropical effect, plus they are good decoy plants and attract the plant eaters. They make millions of tiny seeds and are adept at coming up in cracks in the concrete. Nice flower, pretty plant.

19. I'm a light smoker and just bought three pounds of Bali Shag RYO
That'll have to last me forever because there's no way I'm ever paying $30/pound.

I've looked into growing my own but I just don't have the space right now.
