Obama’s Education Secretary “Arne Duncan in the NRA's Cross Hairs” (Education Week)
Arne Duncan in the NRA's Cross Hairs
The National Rifle Association's monthly magazine has deemed Education Secretary Arne Duncan the "most anti-gun" member of President Obama's cabinet.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

The magazine labels Duncan as such because the new education secretary, when he was superintendent of Chicago Public Schools, declared that children and guns don't mix--and even won an award from the anti-gun lobby (which Duncan touts in his official biography.) The article also calls Duncan out for encouraging students to participate in a poetry, art, and essay contest about anti-handgun violence. And the author warns that Duncan, even as education secretary, can have a big influence on federal gun policy.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

He can incessantly and hysterically use his bully pulpit to promote repressive gun control as an absolute necessity "for the children." ... What he has done to support the gun-ban movement in Illinois he can now do on a vastly larger scale. Moreover, the Department of Education publishes a vast amount of regulations and policy guidelines that affect public schools through the nation. There is every reason to be concerned that Duncan will turn the Department of Education into a tool to promote a gun-ban agenda in America's public schools...

Although Duncan is sure to take a lot of heat for big decisions he makes as education secretary, keeping guns out of schools probably won't be one of them.

It’s a real race to see which of Obama’s selections will be ranked the Number One Gun Grabber.
Vice President Joe Biden
Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel
Atty. General Eric Holder
Sec. Of State Hillary Clinton
Sec. Of Education Arne Duncan
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano
National Drug Control Policy Director Gil Kerlikowske

Is there another contender for Top Gun-Grabber in the administration?

1. The NRA just gets crazier and crazier.
An education secretary who doesn't want kids playing with hand guns. Monstrous!

2. Quite a list there.
Maybe you'd be happier with a Republican administration that works for the gun lobby. Since when does an Education Secretary make gun policy? Because he wants guns out of school, that's a bad thing? Is there any issue more important to you than your gun fetish?

5. RKBA is no more or less important than any right enumerated in our Constitution or those
unenumerated rights protected by the Ninth Amendment.

Do you believe any of those natural, inherent, inalienable/unalienable rights as recognized by PA (1776) and VT (1777) in their constitutions are less important than others?

8. Yes, I know the exercise.
Still doesn't explain your infatuation with guns or why you promote a Republican organization's attack on a Democratic Secretary of Education. And no, I don't think guns should be allowed in public schools.

17. Are you sure about that?
Do you really want kids and teachers defenseless if somebody decides to go on a killing spree? After all if the students and teachers are armed (particularly with concealed weapons) then nobody will dare try anything- or at least they'll be taken down with less loss of innocent life.
:sarcasm:

*Sorry, I know I got a bit carried away with this. I know I'll pay for this big time.

18. Yeah, I worry about this.
I have no kids in middle/high school now...but I'm willing to have everyone screened for guns...who wouldn't?

11. What a load of rubbish the gunnuts have perpetrated on this nation.
Then they try to wrap their garbage in the flag.

It is truly sickening.

3. NRA Not Realy Americans
The NRA is the Lobbying organization for the Firearms manufacturing industry.
They need to be addressed as such every time they are mentioned.
To do otherwise is to lend unearned credability to them.
They are the worst fearmongers of all.
Thier only goal is the unrestricted sales of amunition and firearms.

12. Curiosity - is there something wrong with the 'Firearms manufacturing industry'?
Edited on Mon Mar-30-09 03:40 PM by jmg257
other then they have the support/lobbying power of the NRA? (the sillyness of the OP subject aside)

Makes sense actually, as without the manufacturers and their numerous employees, there wouldn't be any guns to purchase. Likely that many members of the NRA and the firearms manufacturers would have at least a few common goals.

4. I love it...
"There is every reason to be concerned that Duncan will turn the Department of Education into a tool to promote a gun-ban agenda in America's public schools..."

?? The dumb is strong in this statement... it's beyond ironic.
I mean, I like guns, and I really have very little problem with large swaths of the population using them to eliminate each other... and still I find this line of argument to be laughably stupid.

I guess the NRA has decided that they were jealous of what a laughing stock Michael Steele has made of himself, and they decided that they had to get "proactive" to keep up.

6. This Sentence Right Here Nails it Perfectly
"I guess the NRA has decided that they were jealous of what a laughing stock Michael Steele has made of himself, and they decided that they had to get "proactive" to keep up."

And like you if many in our citizenry wants to own guns, more power to them, but what part about keeping them out of/from schools is bad again?
