8. I gave an oral report in junior high school. |
I had forgotten to prepare, but I got up in front of the class and tried to remember a newspaper article I had read on the grape strike. I said it had been going on for 5 years, but at the same time it hit me that it was absurd for a strike to be going on that long. The workers were sprayed with insecticides in the fields, they were paid pitiful wages because it was piece work, the whole thing made me mad. The year was 1970, I was fourteen, and two short years before I had figured out that my father and the rest of the republicans in the country were full of shit. The corporate media would never publicize anything like that nowadays.

9. My kids will eat everything except grapes. I never bought them when they |
were little, because the boycott was on, so now grapes are off their lists of edible items!
My girls have moved on: now they refuse to buy foreign made clothing unless they buy at the Salvation Army or Rescue Mission. I got to tell you, my girls look better in other people's cast-offs than most models!

13. Check out Elfie Balis's pictures and video. He was with Chavez when he started. |
He and his wife can use any donations, or even better purchase his work, a strong labor of love. and incredible. Elfie is now over 80, and still documenting social justice and injustice and fights for the farm worker's rights. http://www.sunmt.org/hangingbannersthumbnails.html http://www.sunmt.org/nuts.htmlhttp://www.sunmt.org/hgsecond10.htmlI have gotten several of his book "Becoming Cesar" and have given them to friends and family who are teachers. http://www.sunmt.org/cesar.html
