For the t shirt, sort of: The Golden Age of DU.
If we could write about the mythical GA of DU, what would you add? :)

The Golden Age of DU

When sniffa still cussed like my momma and there was no FDA warning on TahitiNut and SwampRat tagged all the big forums and the WaPo posted kpete and babylonsister shook it. H2O Man suggested we sharpen our rough tools and Judi Lynn recruited me for El Diablo Chavez.

DU had an underground forum, a secret, invitation only forum, that was shut down after it was apparently infiltrated by a troll or two. This was probably in 2002.

30. Ah, those were the days... Desert Rose and Eriadne. We were the 3 sisters who loved to talk about
metaphysical stuff -- along with several others. So many complained about us posting it in GD that the admins finally gave us our own forum to play in, "The Meeting Room". Of course, it was immediately overrun with assholes who had nothing better to do than spend their days posting mocking and derisive crap when all we all wanted to do was to discuss things on a different level.

That was actually the beginning of all the "groups" that DU now has. E. was a real radical who got ts'd some years back, DesertRose rarely posts anymore -- I still hang around because I'm a pathetic old woman living alone and DU is the entirety of my social life. :P

There was a time, maybe still, when it cost more to have an unlisted # in the phone book than to have a listed one. As such, I have been listed under numerous monikers. D. Duck, and Enzo Ferrari among them.

My question: Have you ever owned a Ferrari?

If you have, what did you think?

I've owned two. They were fun but...
Ferrari is an Italian word. It means...In the shop.

Oh yeah, I still miss Carlos whose head would explode every time you mentioned Ralph Nader and though he is still with us, I miss "Underpants" scrolling avatar.

47. A great loss, a terrible loss. He had the most amazing mind.
He'd post something that had so many layers and levels to it, that reading it was like dropping acid. And once you got the knack of what he was talking about, it was like a sunburst, like a diamond being shot into your forehead (hat tip to "Apocalypse Now"). He made way too much sense for most minds around here, so of course he was exiled.

I was looking at his blog and found that he hadn't posted in years. So I hunted around and found this page where someone wrote that people thought he passed away.
http://vradul.googlepages.com/ABlowtoUSExceptionalism.txt

That page is in html but look about 5 lines from the top where the reference to him begins. Sad.

I Googled some more and find nothing on the web for several years. So perhaps it's true that he died.

63. There was a really cool guy here for awhile, an old ex-pat living in Mexico.
I'm ashamed that I can't remember his username -- it was "poco" something. I don't think there are many DUers from those days who would remember him, he didn't post a lot, but when he DID have something to say -- PAY ATTENTION!

He was in his 60s, an old activist. He kept trying to teach people how to get organized, how to form a resistance movement, but most people just ignored it. He gave really good advice -- stuff like how to start by forming small cells of activists, and how to reach out into your community and listen to peoples' concerns.

It was really valuable stuff. I think he eventually drifted away because he realized that hardly anyone here was serious about doing anything in the real world. We could surely use his experience now.

He was long gone years ago. He pre-dated DuctapeFatwa. It's bugging the shit out me that I can't think of his username -- otherwise I'd try doing a search.

Oh well. It's really kinda weird to me that I've spent so many years here, and seen all these people come and go. I left DU back in 2004 during the primaries, and stayed away for almost a year.

The DU abides.
