60. If the Pope invites you to the Vactican and you accept
you should probably respect the tradition of the Vatican. Particularly if you are a diplomat trying to achieve diplomatic measures. However if you ever randomly bump into the Pope on the street use your best judgment.

You might do that with a mere President, handshake as he/she is your equal.. But a Queen or a King.. Something different called Protocol.. Just the way it is, and have been for as long as royalty have excistet..

Specially when it came to the Queen or King of United Kingdom.. They have been there since the year 600 or so.. And have always have something "with them":. And the protocol meeting the Queen is little different than meeting a President.. Again, just the way thing is when it came to a old Royal House as the british one..

On the other hand, in my own little native country, who also have a King, the protocol is less formal than in UK.. Even that they do have their share of protocols when it came to how to greet our monarch.. You as example are not at first name with the King.. Your highness or your Majesty is used for the most part.. And it work very well. Even that our King are just the head of state, and have no real political power - that is directly.. Formally and indirectly our King have some political clout yet..

I for one, would never greet a king, or a queen or an President the same way I greet my nabour, specially that son of a B*** who are living 3 doors down my own.. My cat used his flower beds to do the toilet, something the kittens got very used to also.. Cat can be VERY smart sometimes:).. Mysterious he was not very friendly with the cats...

I would do as the PROTOCOL says I should do.. And act accordingly.. And I guess mr Obama would do the same.. And not give the Queen a back rug as your President, GWB did when behind the back of Merckel, the german Chancellor. That was a smart move I guess:sarcasm:
I would be more than surprised if President Obama was not acting according to Protocol. He is in a whole different liga than your former president.. And thank our Lord for that..

16. Few years back the Queen
decided modernizing the whole thing was more appropriate, so curtseys etc are out.

I forget what year it was, but they have become decidedly casual of late, now that the Queen Mom is gone. She was 'old school' so it was always in deference to her.

..and the humour side of it is wearing more than a little thin...yes we get the whole "War of Independence (with massive help from the French)" thing...that still doesn't change the fact that Her Majesty is a Head of State and deserves respect for that if nothing else, not to mention all of the stuff she has done for YEARS for charity, as well as working in the Army during WWII...so yes I get a little defensive when people get all colonial on Liz...especially when it goes on all fucking day long...

Yorktown was not won by the rebels - it was won by the 30.000 strong French army who just "Happened" to be in US at the same time as the War of Independence was on... The Rebels was on their knees, when almost out of the blue 30.000 frenchmen was coming in, and saving the ass of both Franklin and Washington, and most of the other american "founding fathers".. In fact if it had not been for the french, the brits maybe had won the war, and had hang mr Washington in the gallows facing Themsen in the late 1700s early 1800s.. And most of your greates rebel generals, was born, raised and speak french... La-Fayette a general who have his own history in the US.. was a french nobelman... And most of George Washington's Generals was either educated in England, or in Franc. Even your own George Washington was an british officers in his younger days..

On the other hand, a full blown rebellion was more than the british wanted at the time, in the late 1700s they had more wars than they had time.. With some diplomatic work, the american colonies might have had their local ruling, self rule and so on after a few year.. But as the history was falling out, the US was born, and the american colonies was not there anymore... Not in USA anyway.. But in Canada the Old colonies was until 1931...

The only reason the Brits stayed in the war as long as they did was because they went out and hired the German mercenaries known as Hessians.

And the combined forces of the Brits at Yorktown was about 9000 troops total.

On the side of the United States (we were sovereign and had been for more than five yearws regardless of what the mad king and the rest of the Brits wanted to think) were 8000 regulars, 3100 militia, and 7800 French regulars. We also had 29 French warships backing up the siege.

So don't try to play it off as the French saving us. You used allies as well to your advantage, we only responded in kind. HAd the British not already been in a fight with France, you might never have had to face them on OUR continent, too.

And Yorktown was the second humiliating defeat of the allegedly greatest standing army in the world at the time. The first came at Saratoga (twice) in 1777 where the order of battle included 7000 Brits and Germans fighting against 12,000 Americans. Not a single bloody Frenchman was on that field of battle.

You are right about the germans.. They was very good at fighting the rebels.. And by the way, it was not mercenaries in the modern term of the word, but rather regular army formations, who just tend to be paid for by the british.. As the same as the French king tend to have life guards who was from Switzerland. Or that the guards protecting the Pope also was from Switzerland.. In the 1600 and 1700s the idea of an nation to have the power to summon thousands of soldiers was ludicrous.. Much the same as mercaniers are to most people today...

The French was there, and they was fighting the british very well.. And yes, the terrible French was also instrumental of saving your sorry as at Yorktown. That is something most military historians at least admit, but off course most dosen't... It is far better to believe that the French army was at no interest, and was more or less always in the glory Minut mens way... Yes they was brave, yes they inflicted casualty on the british, but if it was not for the french army, and the french navy who harassed the lines to UK then the whole history in US would have been turned, and not to the colonies side..

France and UK have a LONG history of been enemies.. For the most part because both Kings claim they have the right to the crown on the other side of the Canal... And for France who was in pickle of problems in the late 1700s, it was a important way to hit back on Uk, when it hurt most.. And the francs men had their own agenda in the americas.. You know Louisiana and other parts of what is US today, was colonized by the french. Even that it was not FRANCE in any prospect of the history..

Uk, who at the time had as you point out the greats standing army at the time, had also some very long supply line back to Europe.. And the "not important" French navy who was hitting the british quite well when arriving in the colonies. was giving the british more pain than the people would have... They after all, had to pay the bills the wars was given UK... The supply lines, and the fact that most brits was not interesting of paying the bills, even in the House of Lords the nobel chamber of the Parliament the voice of economical concern was been listen to.. So yes after that humiliating defeat, the brits find out, it was time to get out, and let the dam colonies be independent.. Yes they was driven out that is sure.. Many who was "loyal" to the end was also driven out - or murdered by others who wanted their land, or their property.. It was a bloody aftermath of the war of independence... And many was running for their life, to the safety of Canada..

William Wallace, was not this man in the end quartered, a very painfully and horrible way of been executed, on a world who was used to executing, a quartered was really bad... And the rebellion from the High landers was crushed, and most of them either been killed or at least running out as refugees in Ireland, and France.. Because many High Landers was Catholic in religion, and the Protestant's leaders wanted the Catholic to get into the fold, one way or another...

54. Incorrect, the Prime Minister is the Head of Government...
The Head of State is the Queen(Monarchy). Just as she's the Head of State in Canada, Australia and a quite a few other Commonwealth countries.

The United States has a Head of Government AND State in the Presidency, most countries that follow the Westminster Model don't, they separate the two.

She is the head of STATE... Believe me.. In the official ranking she is OVER the Prime Minister... The whole concept of Prime minister is an rather interesting and funny history when you think about it.. When the Kings of Hanover was given the crown of UK, George 1 could not a single word of english, and never learned to speak it either... And was missing his own principality in one of the german "country" who he believed to be more civilized than England. Who was cold and wet compared to most other parts of Europe.. The idea of Prime Minister was something that have grown for many hundred years, but George 1 was no fool, and understand he needed a person who could take the brunt if something was going down the toilet. He was not like the middle ages king, and therefore have to treat the subjects more carefully. Or he could end up as Charles the first.. Who was beheaded... The first, and to this day the only recored British king to do that..

The Prime minister was first and foremost the go between the Parliament, and the King.. But after a while, the role of Prime minister changed, the role was not just a go between the Parliament, because he was more or less the leader of the party or group, who had the most influence and power in the Parlament... A idea who to this day even have their told in most parliamentarian country today.. The King or Queen might not have the day to day political leadership as they once had and most country who still have the monarchy, the King and Queen tend to have less power than they had just 100 year ago.. But you can ha much power, informal power even if you are just a functional figure on the top of the power pyramid too..

80. Thanks for the lesson.
You seem like the person to ask. Can you offer up a couple titles for me to get a good grasp on British History (not way indepth, but not a surface-level one either). I teach a class which culminates in a competitive tournament (ultimate end is a national competition in DC) about the Constitution. One of the units is about the historical background, specifically British history. I know a fair amount, but want to spend some time this summer reading more indepth stuff. Any thoughts on good titles?

50. Well, that makes two of us.
Hmm. One would have thought that after the last eight years, we'd want to rebuild our international reputation.

Apparently not. Seems we're still fighting the Revolutionary War.

There's common decency and politeness, and then there are stupid arbitrary "rules" like: don't go sleeveless, don't speak until spoken to, bowing, curtsying, blah blah blah.

It's as dumb and meaningless as the "take off your hat inside" rule. Means nothing, and some people never question why this type of idiotic protocol even exists.

Oh, and we're just having fun with it. Or is that "inappropriate" too?

There you goo.. If you got that face, you know you are in DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP problems.. In the old days, long before the terrible colonial wars, and all that, the look alone was grounds alone to have the head on a stake.. That is a look, 800-900 f hundred year of pure royalty can get you.... If you are an ordinary commoner, you have no clue about what that look really mean.... Contempt.. Pure royal contempt...

Good grief.. I am no Royal, or as I know about it, have "blue" lines... But even I have the brain to understand what THAT look was telling... But then your former President was knot exactly known for his intelligence was he?...

But then, His Majesty Queen Elizabeth 2 of UK is a woman who know her place.. And who have no interest of playing just for the game.. She IS an Royal... And that as pure as it gets too..

Our late King Olav, who was family with Elizabeth was also very clear of his role, as Head of State. And King.. And was very clear if everyone overstepped the line.. He also would have given mr Bush jr a look, that would have given most people the scare.. In full Gala uniform he was a man to respect... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olav_V_of_Norway

And I guess the Queen is no less demanding at her role in the whole affair... After a "Pick up" as this, THAT Look is the lesser of two evils... I would probably believe that after the wisit was over, poor old Blair got a clear message from his Queen

She certainly did nothing to deserve being treated like some fraternity pledge.

I agree... Your former President, was acting out of line most of his time. Specially when abroad.. He was a shame to gis own country - and the worst is, that he had no clue about it himself...

61. Yo Obama - What the Fuck are you doing bowing, even slightly to the fucking queen?
As an American, we kicked the fuckin' Brits out of here, in part, to never have to bow to a monarch ever again. Where does that old bitch get the money to live her life-style? What work has she and her brood ever done worthwhile? Obama, as a decendant of Africa and slightly Ireland, you of all people should know better. Unless you feel that you are part of that class of in-bred mutants who are self-deceived into believing that you were born to rule the rest of us dumb assess! So, bowing and catering to each other, handing over the people's money to your fellow rulers, using our young people to fight your wars, does not bother you in the least bit!
