19. The Queen is in her 80s somewhere, isn't she?
I'm 79 and have lost nearly five inches of the height I was at 35. It happens, to the elderly, royalty or not. I was surprised, too, at how short she appears. But standing next to the President and First Lady she would indeed look as though the Obamas had shrunk the queen.

I admire the woman for still standing up on her pins, and without a cane yet.

22. That makes my mom just a year older than the Queen
my mother has lost nearly 4 inches (I'm finally taller than her) as she's aged (Fosamax wasn't made soon enough, though she takes it now). I have no idea how tall the Queen was, but her short stature may be more a problem of aging than something to laugh at.

way back when his Dad was in office. At a state dinner, in the UK I think, W made conversation by telling the Queen he was the black sheep of his family, and asking who the black sheep in her family was. She was not amused.

What woman has her purse on her arm IN THE HOUSE? You know, money, keys, lipstick, kleenex-those should not be needed-ie the bathroom is nearby-unless it's codes for something. (she doesn't use money or keys anyway I'm sure-she's the freaking queen) WHAT is in there?

20. What's in the Queen's handbag...
'What's In The Queen's Handbag: And Other Royal Secrets' reveals that though the 81-year-old monarch doesn't carry cash, keys or a passport - since she doesn't own one - her bag is far from empty. Inside are a collection of good luck charms given to her by her children, including miniature dogs, horses and saddles, plus family snaps. The most treasured of which is a photo of Prince Andrew on his safe return from the Falklands in 1982.

Also inside the tote is a make-up case, given to her by Prince Philip as a wedding gift 60 years ago. It also houses an s-shaped metal meat hook which she places on the edge of the dinner table, from which to suspends her handbag, keeping it off the floor.

And more info:

It's not only what's inside the monarch's bags that is significant, but the bag itself, for she uses it to communicate with her staff in a very subtle manner. Before dining with the Queen, a point is made to inform guests that dinner will end in about five minutes after she places her bag on the table top. On walkabouts, she holds the bag to one side to show she intends to move on, at which point a lady-in-waiting joins the conversation, allowing her to slip away without causing offence. When at a banquet, if the Queen's bag is placed on the floor, then it's a sign that she's not finding the conversation interesting, and wants nothing more than to escape. However, if the royal bag is dangling happily from the crook of her left arm, she is happy and relaxed.

Inside the purse is a tissue AND a little device that she can afix to the side of a table and then hang her purse from. Her personal housekeeping staff also bring Her Majesty's own toilet seat with them. The Royal Bum only sits on a Royal Throne.

So she's probably lost some height.

My mother always towered over me, even when she was 82 years old. She was about five-foot-seven plus a couple of inches for heels. I'm five foot three.

The Obamas are BIG people. That's one reason they both look fabulous in their clothes.

63. Let me clarify.
She was wearing lace up things with crepe rubber soles and a chunky 2 inch heels.

When I was young (1950s-60s) she wore these bitchy-looking spike heels that just had an elastic band across the front. They are called Spring-O-Lators. No kidding. The middle of the sole has a piece of elastic in it. And she never fell down in them.

My momma was a hot number, back in the day.

54. I found a picture of her on the throne...
She strongly reminded me of my grandmother. I would not want to be standing in front of her when she was displeased; I'd probably just do as she said without any argument...

45. They grow 'em tall in Illinois, I guess.
Actually, the queen looks well for an 80+ year old. But people tend to stay well longer these days, especially when healthcare is universal and financed by the state.

64. An FDR cabinet member said Liz's parents "looked like Pygmies next to the towering Roosevelts." In
fact, when ER visited the Buck House during WWII, Cecil Beaton made her sit down for the official photograph with the Royals because it was thought that it would hurt Allied morale if folks saw the FL so much bigger than the King.

70. Like others said, I bet she shrunk with age.
She just can't chalk it up to being Italian: my grandma says, "Italian women don't die, we shrink out of existence."
I'm 5'1" and I tower over her and I towered over my great-grandma before she died. It makes me feel good and kinda sad.

77. Well she is 84 years old maybe she needs Boniva
Cause I'm sure you're not attempting to pit 40-something year old people over a woman that offered great solace to her people while handing out food & blankets during the bombed out Nazi V-2 blitz of London doddering little handbag or no she did just Knight Teddy < ;)

93. Agreed! But she didn't *curtsy* whoopsy breach in worldly protocol...
Maybe, I hear you suggesting, that it is not reasonable to expect a woman from the south side of ChiTown to get it right the first time but there's plenty of time or is there?

Can we have someone in the lab get that enlarged? It might be important.
