(CNN) -- Egged on by a 17-year-old, two 10-year-old boys joined in the attack of a Florida homeless man, leaving him bruised and bloody, police said.

The incident highlights an upswing in violent crime across the U.S. against the homeless.

In 2006, there were 142 attacks and 20 murders, several involving teenagers seeking a vicious thrill, according to the Washington, D.C.-based National Coalition for the Homeless.

Tuesday's incident, which took place in Daytona Beach, Florida, may make history, said the nonprofit's acting executive director Michael Stoops.

1. Am I right in assuming this is a "scared straight" situation?
If these kids did what's been charged, then I'm not sure I disagree.

2. If the 10-year-olds attacked on their own initiative
then go ahead and try as adults.

But if they were "egged on" by the 17-year-old as the story indicates, then I'd assume their own initiative would have them leaving the homeless guy alone. So it's something between a severe scolding with rehab, and a stint in juvenile detention. But not treated as adults.

The 17-year-old should be tried as an adult and sent away for a long time.

3. If you watched the video you get to see the man's face and what they
did to him. IMHO, they need to spend some time in JD.

4. It's not just a FlorDUH problem.

5. "A Clockwork Orange" made real............
Hell, when I first saw that movie I thought it was fictional. Turns out, its downright prophetic. All these kids need now are codpieces and little bowler-hats.
