I really hope President Obama is starting to think about gun control |
|
Because these shootings over the past few days have been terrible. It'll keep getting worse as unemployment rises and people become more and more desperate.

over 10 posts already, and this thread isn't even close to lukewarm. Am I in the right place? This is still DU's GD, right?

2. The issue's not quite ripe yet |
|
though the nation's getting closer with each mass shooting- and with each series of law enforcement deaths.

4. if he MENTIONS gun control, the right wing will align itself like never before and we'll lose |
|
our majority in 2010 and the WH in 2012.
The last thing we need to do is be sen as "gun grabbers". The right has already laid this foundation and all we need to do is prove them right.

5. That's what this man feared. |

PITTSBURGH - A man described by friends as someone who feared the Obama administration was about to impose a ban on guns opened fire on police during a domestic disturbance call Saturday, killing three of them, a police official said. http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/World/2009/04/04/9005206-ap.html

7. The only way that "gun control" would have prevented those shootings |
|
Edited on Sat Apr-04-09 12:25 PM by Occam Bandage
is if Obama were to outright ban and confiscate every gun in the country, which is about as politically reasonable, Constitutionally sound, and realistically possible as the right-wing fantasy of scooping up everyone not born in America and returning them to their countries of origin.

We have a better chance of closing our borders, end immigration, ban abortion, and legalize all drugs than banning guns in America. It is just never going to happen, and god forbid a group of politicians try to make it happen.

8. Good plan for the 2010 elections |
|
If everyone demanded the Democrats in power enforce gun registration and ban all guns except muzzle loaders then a landslide election could be forthcoming.

9. You can't control paranoia. Or bigotry. Or lack of intelligence. Or fear. |
|
Those traits drive people to 'need' guns. And until people learn that guns aren't the last resort, we are doomed to killing each other. Gun control, it's been a joke for 50 years, it will be a joke for the next 50 years.

10. Seems to me that it will work in exactly |
|
the opposite direction. If people fear that they might be confronted with some nut in a public place intent on killing as many people as possible before the police can respond, they will be a lot less likely to advocate for gun control and a lot more likely to arm themselves with more powerful weapons.

A few gun control laws here and is just porn for the anti-gun crowd.

14. We need to accomplish way to much to split the party over this issue. |
|
I am for a TOTAL ban on guns but it would be political suicide now.
This must take a back burner so we can bring back jobs and address Global Warming.
Gun issues are now termed "small potatoes" in my book.
