whitehouse blackberrys and RNC e-mail accounts

I recall when Al Gore, as VP started using a blackberry. My only fear is that the GOP liars (I hate being redundant) will explain away Ralston's, Rove's and other White House staffers' use of blackberrys and private accounts by claiming that Al Gore did it first.
I know that you can tie in any e-mail account into your machine. Do we know whether Al's accounts were government or not?

...was during the 2000 Recount. He may have just used it for the campaign.
