Now I don't mean to say "Commie Pinko Dirtbag" is a Western imperialist", but just because one is a Communist and Anti-Imperialist does not always change identification.

For example here is a 1972 Soviet cartoon denouncing US involvement in Viet Nam. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUMrHGxvL5Y The target audience is clearly Soviet, as propaganda directed at a Western audience would be in English (or whatever language the citizens of a specifically targeted country speak). Notice that the narrating voice is actually an American, while the Vietnamese are silent victims of their war-making. This is not to say that the Vietnamese are depicted unsympathetically, but it is interesting that the voice delivering the criticism of the war is technically on the other side of the conflict than the Russian producers of the film are. Similarly the last part of the film puts emphasis on Western protestors for far more camera time than the clips of their Eastern counterparts. Similarly Western iconography of Mary plays a central role to the piece. Such a display shows the possibility that a Russian audience is actually more likely to identify with their Western opponents on a cultural and emotional level than with their Vietnamese allies.
