Sigh......Why would Bill Maher defend a nasty bigot by
proclaiming "What she was saying was Democrats are 'pussies'??" :wtf:

That's what he said last night on Real Time regarding Ann Coulter's comment that John Edwards is a "faggot."

I realize the show is intended to be politically incorrect, but that doesn't excuse Maher in my eyes.

Come on dude......it only encourages her to continue her childish behavior when she hears people defend her bigotry...even if it is indirectly

**Watch her use the slur if you haven't seen it yet:

1. Well, if DUers can say similar things about Dems here at DU...
... certainly he can do it on the tv. Sometimes they need to be pushed. If we didn't push them I don't know if they would have had pushed an appropriations bill with deadlines for getting out of Iraq.

I was a little surprised to hear him say that. But I'm new to HBO and am still surprised to hear the word "fuck" coming out of my tv set, too.

2. If you call the following from Maher "defending" Coulter, you're mistaken:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=389&topic_id=445610

http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0703/18/lkl.01.h...

How's your friend, Ann Coulter, and the faggot word?

What do you make of that? MAHER: Oh...

KING: By the way, I want to...

MAHER: ... you can't say that here.

KING: That's what she said.

MAHER: Oh, I see.

KING: I'm quoting her.

MAHER: OK.

KING: I didn't say it.

Where did it -- where does John Edwards -- how is that funny?

MAHER: You know what?

I think...

KING: John Edwards is a gay?

MAHER: Yes, you have to...

KING: Where?

MAHER: You have to think like a right-winger. First of all, it's interesting to note that she made that comment in front of that right-wing convention. She was not booed. There was actually a moment of ooh and then they all burst into applause. It went over like a cross on fire.

They actually liked that comment. And to people, normal people, you know, people who think like human beings, it was just confusing.

It was like why is John Edwards gay?

He's good looking.

OK, is that equivalent with gay?

No. And then she explained it and I kind of thought about it and I see what she's saying, is that, no, she really meant to say -- what she was trying to say, it's code word for the Democrats are -- I hope I can say this -- you said faggot -- pussies.

Can I say that?

KING: That's code word for -- I never read that. That never came through.

MAHER: No. No, but that's what they mean, is that he's a faggot because he thinks and speaks in complete sentences and reads whole books and doesn't just go off to war without thinking about it twice. And he cares about poor people and the environment, you know, poof stuff, Larry.

KING: Do you still like Ann Coulter?

MAHER: I haven't talked to her in so long. I don't know if she still likes me.

KING: Really?

She used to come on your show a lot.

MAHER: A lot. Yes.

KING: Would you have her back?

MAHER: Yes, I'd have -- of course I'd have her back. I mean I like her -- I like what she says less and less. I never agreed with her. But she never was like out there. But this was a joke, in her defense.

KING: Right.

MAHER: I mean she was making a joke.

KING: A bad joke.

MAHER: I don't know. You know, for that crowd, it was apparently the right joke.

4. I'm talking about his appearance last night on HBO....not
his appearance on Larry King which I watched.

Last night he indirectly defended her use of the word by coming up with his own explanation as to why she said it.

I found it rather offensive.

5. I haven't watched it yet — but I think she said it because, to a Republican, it's
the worst thing one can be called. They're the ones who are nuts.

Obama the N-word during an appearance.

11. Bill Maher is not exactly
a torch-carrying liberal. People seem to think he's one of us, and he's not.

14. That's true, he's not one of us -- he claims to be a Libertarian, but
that doesn't take away from the fact that I'm still disappointed because
I watch his show every week and agree with him far more than I disagree.

24. Libertarian and Democratic are
far from the same thing. And while it's more than possible to agree with him, it's VERY important to understand where he's coming from. I think it would be correct to consider him an iconoclast, one who answers to no one but himself. He likes to throw out provocative ideas, and then runs away from the results.

The important thing is to understand is that he is not one of us.

16. that is what she was saying
she didn't mean Edwards is/was gay.

The GOP has been painting dems as pussies for years.

Maher is obviously torn over Ann these days. He said on King she used to be a friend but that he doesn't find much he agrees with her about these days. He went on to say he never really agreed with her but she was "funner" before, not as mean spirited. Or something to that effect.

Before 2003 or so I had a couple of friends who are GOP. I pretty much split with them over the war and Bush and we dont talk anymore. But if you ask me about them the worst I will say is "they are misguided." Maybe someday I will get to the place where I can trash them but I hope not.

That's what I think Bill was doing.

(There is a piece by Brock, maybe in one of his books after he saw the light, about Coulter where he said they would trash the dems by day and go drinking at night and joke about how they were just jerking chains to make money. I can see that maybe Ann might not have been so loathsome years ago and if Bill met her then he might have considered her to be "misguided" but not rank.)

25. Well, you have to admit that in recent history...
Back when the republicans had a monopoly on the government, the Democrats were behaving like spineless...well...pussies. They're starting to fix that now that they've got the majority back. Yes, Ann Coulter's comments were beyond wrong, and when it comes to Maher, what can you expect from Coulter's fuck buddy? I'd think you'd be used this behavior from him by now.
Our jobs as democrats aren't to be blindlessly loyal to our party. That is why we hate most republicans. It's our job to question and call them on their spineless behavior. It's our place to call them out, not Ann's. As for the comment above of us here at DU saying as much about the democrats, well, yeah. THAT IS OUR JOB! And if whoever thinks we're traitors to our parties, then they are no better than George Bush and his flunkies who think we should blindly follow our government. THAT is the opposite of patriotism. I'm so sick of people thinking we should just agree with the democrats blindly. It pisses me off actually, as you could probably tell from this little rant.
