Breaking: Rep. Harman in Quid-Pro-Quo w/Bush DOJ & AIPAC
by calchala

Apparently Rep. Harman was involved in a wiretap scandal and promised to lobby the justice department in regards to two individuals from AIPAC if they would lobby Nancy Pelosi to place Rep. Harman as the head of House Intelligence Committee.

Harman in Quid-Pro-Quo w/Bush DoJ and Aipac
http://www.cqpolitics.com/wmspage.cfm?docID=hsnews-000003098436&cpage=1

While the information is mostly from 2006, what is new, per CQ Politics is that Rep. Harman's investigation was not dropped due to "lack of evidence" but merely because Alberto Gonzales wanted her to intervene on the Warrantless Wiretapping scandal that was brewing. This explains why she and democrats in general, did not act in the face of the allegations that came out of the NYTimes regarding that program.

Further, this also explains why Rep. Harman did not get a job with the Obama administration in the CIA or elsewhere.

According to two officials privy to the events, Gonzales said he "needed Jane" to help support the administration’s warrantless wiretapping program, which was about to be exposed by the New York Times

Further, what's more interesting is that Harman helped HOLD BACK THE STORY ON THE EVE OF THE 2004 ELECTIONS. (Personally, I think this could have helped Kerry win in 2004)

1. A-Ha! There's another little mystery solved
Pelosi passed up Harmon for the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence in favor of Alcee Hastings.

Hastings didn't get in.

From the Wiki on Hastings:

House Intelligence Committee controversy
After the 2006 United States House of Representatives elections, Hastings attracted controversy after it was reported that incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi might appoint him as head of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Pelosi reportedly favored Hastings instead of the ranking Democrat Jane Harman due to political differences and support for Hastings by the Congressional Black Caucus.

"political differences", uh-huh.

11. She's gone from DLC further to Neocon (FPI):
Newest Neocon Outfit Hosting Afghanistan Forum With Sen. McCain And Rep. Harman

Largely under the radar, some of the major neoconservative figures who fashioned the rationale for the Iraq war have set up a shop for shaping future trends in American foreign policy.

And while the Foreign Policy Initiative does not have friends within the White House to whom it can push its agenda, it is not lacking for pull among senior elected officials, including Democrats.

FPI, whose founders and principals include Robert Kagan, Bill Kristol, and Dan Senor, will host a summit next Tuesday titled "Afghanistan: Planning for Success." Billed as a "half-day conference" to "discuss how the United States and our allies can succeed in Afghanistan," the event will feature appearances and discussion from Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Rep. John M. McHugh (R-N.Y.) -- ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee -- and Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), who chairs of the House Homeland Security Intelligence Subcommittee.

"I know these people and recognize where they're coming from," the Congresswoman said of her appearance at the event. "I'm coming from a different place and want to be sure that point of view is heard. My point of view will be extremely sympathetic to the Obama Administration position on Af/Pak."

to see where the harm was done. Sp she was right there in letting two spies off...unbelievable. Obviously her country doesn't come first with her.

Edited to add: The whole think had a stink about it right from the start. Now, I wonder, if any revelations will be forthcoming about the I. Liar Libby trial as little by little all the cupboard doors are seeming to be opened and cleared out.

4. "The Other Secret Program"
There were references in the Ashcroft hospital discussions to "the other secret program", one that FISA must never know about.
That would be Operation Blackmail, and this is one of the places that it really paid off for them.

13. That is my bet.
I've wondered all along if there was something we weren't seeing that was holding the Dems back. I'll bet everyone of them has been tapped and there is a file about something.
Harman was a shot over the bow. It's probably a warning about what will happen if prosecution does occur or whatever.

7. MORE:
Next, is it possible Harman knew these tapes existed and was compromised vis a vis the administration? That's purely speculation on my part. Nothing in the article suggests that. But hearing it alleged that Gonzales protected her because he knew she'd be so helpful -- that really makes me wonder.

This raises lots and lots of questions -- not least of which is why this is coming out right now. Any particular reason people in the intel community would want to start talking to the press right now?

14. This is disgusting - especially because her motivation was a position for herself
I agree with your comment that this story coming out before the 2004 election could have made a difference. It would have been a wid card though in that terror traumatized time. Had it come out, Bush would have defended it as keeping America safe. Kerry would have had the more difficult position and I hope he would have said the things he did say in 2005 when it did come out. The question though is whether doing that would lose Kerry more votes from people buying the likely argument that being unwilling to wiretap illegally would mean he wasn't tough enough to fight the W*A*R O*N T*E*R*R*O*R than he would gain from libertarians who should have been horrified by this.

(Note - There is no politician I admire more than John Kerry and I am not questioning that he would be 100% against wiretapping. What I am trying to say is that in 2004 America, it might be that most people who would have been appalled by this were already voting for Kerry. In 2004, many people were wiling to have our government do things they knew were wrong out of the mistaken idea that "it kept us safe.")

The one that can put you in jail for protesting against government policy! She needs to go and I would say this sounds like Treason to me! She also has a major chunk of the Military Industrial Complex in her district! Lots of money in her campaigns from them. I know I used to live there!
