Meghan McCain: Rove’s ‘creeping me out on Twitter’
Meghan McCain: Rove’s ‘creeping me out on Twitter’
By Muriel Kane

Published: April 20, 2009
Updated 1 hour ago

The daughter of Sen. John McCain is being followed on Twitter by Karl Rove — and she’s finding the experience “creepy.” Not only that, but the Tweets she gets back from Rove in return strike her as “boring.”

“Karl Rove follows me on Twitter,” Meghan McCain writes at The Daily Beast. “That’s creepy. I joined Twitter a few months ago; so far, it has been a liberating way to transition from political to personal blogging. … But there’s also been a downside: I am now being followed by Karl Rove, and my local sheriff, and God knows how many other political pundits. We need to take Twitter back from the creepy people.”

McCain suspects that Rove’s own tweets may be the product of an assistant, or “ghost Twitterer,” since they reveal so little about him — unlike her own father’s far more personal twittering.

2. Twitter creeps me out. Why would anyone want to broadcast their goings on
to masses of people every day?

21. And why would anyone want to follow someone's every move all day long?
The whole concept seems like the biggest waste of time and energy.

24. I post about my art & its process, politics, wine, cooking
pictures of my furballs, get up to the second info such as the last Cali earthquake was tweeted about twenty minutes before teh Times, Chronicle or Google reported on it.

Its not just "I pooped." "Just had dinner."

28. What? You don't find my hemmoroids fascinating? My mother-in-law?
You don't want to know how my heel spur treatments are going? What I'm doing next year for the super bowl? Why my boyfriend dumped me?

You're not waiting, with baited breath, for me to declare my new favorite TV show?

Next thing you'll tell me is you don't want to see my scrapbooks of my trips to the amish country.

38. You don't have to broadcast personal goings-on.
You can broadcast things like upcoming events, haikus, participate in word games, follow headlines. People complain about airlines (I read some eye-opening stories!) and you can brag about your computer and you can rave about the best sandwich in the world.

You can also block 'creeps', so I wonder if Meghan is just being a whiner or if she's even bothered to explore the service.

The best use I know of for twitter is real-time organization. Like participating in a flash-mob, responding to a fire, or avoiding riot police at an RNC protest.

Megan McCain is now tagged "enemy" by the right for speaking her mind. Oh, but these are the guys that say Rush and Hannity are exercising "free speech" by ignighting the right to violence.

9. Ah Karl...you did it yourself. Why do you keep persisting in this charade?
we all know you fucked up. You advised an imbecile into his political grave by taking the far right route..now you fight against the inevitable backlash from those in your party who would dare point out that the emporor was naked all along and you still think he is clothed.

Just a pathetic attempt to clean up his own legacy.

12. more useless blather.
who gives a damn?

we live in a totally self absorbed society. I find that the few that twitter now are on the far end of the bell curve of self indulgence.
what is so freaking important in their lives that I must know every single moment of their happenings? "I'm drinking a latte'", "I don't care for what so and so said", "is it important to really care about the children?"

good. fucking. god.

What has happen to us? do we now have so much free time that we don't know what to do with that we have to fill it up with inane insights?

or more likely,

Do we have this overwhelmed feeling (not overwhelming) to be on top of the latest bullshit in fear that we might miss something? Miss what, exactly? Miss some half-witted boobs attempt at being witty or insightful?

or do we fear time to contemplate our lives? To reflect on just how fucked up it is that we have become obsessed with filling each and every waking moment with something to fill the void of silence?

We have become a society void of day dreamers. Time once occupied by gazing out the window and imagining the unimaginable is now replace with head down, eyes glued to screen and thumbs gone wild. And when that is not happening, the obsessive checking and rechecking for a response.

oh fuck it. here we are and here is were we are going to stay. Short attention span 140 character theater.

Here's a thought: if we as a society have a massive blackout, the cell phone towers only have enough juice in their battery back ups for, at most, 3 days. If the black outs stretch beyond 3 days, that's when the withdrawals start and the riots begin.

I weep for our future on so many levels.

25. So true. I often wonder if young folks have any moments of silence, contemplation, enjoyment of the
immediate environment in which they are passing. They all live in each other's back pockets these days . . .

IIRC (and apparently I don't) i read something about her getting 4% of the distributorship or something.

Another reason to legalize pot: it will cut into money spent on alcohol.

36. Comedy gold here:
“My local Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio (who, as the author of America’s Toughest Sheriff, is notorious in his own right, recently sent me a Tweet about an answer I gave a fellow Twitter follower. He tried to tell me to go easy on them. It’s really scary when the guy who houses his inmates in tents in the summer and whose most visible public relations success involves pink underwear, boxers, and handcuffs tells you to tone it down."
