I need some DU love and reassurance
I know (of Course) that DU members mostly share my thoughts and wants for a better world but after Yesterday..I'm burned out.

I was fixing a new customer's Computer, at their house... (formating the drive and replacing Vista with XP pro.)
I think we all forget sometimes how "screwed up" and ignorant some people are when it comes to politics and life.
Well, this Man and wife took the cake as far as being ill-informed about everything from Harry Truman to Obama.

I've never, ever heard anyone spout the Right-wing, idiotic talking points as strongly as these nuts did yesterday.

These 2 went on and on for 4 hours about how disgusting the Democrats are and how they've "screwed up this country".

Here I was.. in their Den and I had to listen to>>

The Country was fine until the Democrats came into power.
Fox News is the only reliable source of the Truth.
Democrats "Stole" the election.
If George Bush would have stayed in power, this housing mess would not have happened.
We should have broadcast the torture of the Iraq people on national TV (to teach them a lesson)
The Banks went broke because of all the stupid laws that the left-wing passed...
...plus the left-wing stole all the money from the treasury and gave it to the poor and lazy.
Global warming is a plot to steal more money from hard-working Americans.
Gays should be Killed so that "their sinful Genes" will not infiltrate the Good Genes of straight people.

I could go on and on but my brain can't force any more idiocy to my fingers,,,

I sat there thinking "You're getting paid 250 bucks for this ...don't let your emotions cost you an easy 250".
It was all I could do to keep my big mouth shut but man O man, what a strain...

You don't even have to respond to this post but I would appreciate if some of you would just tell me that I'm not alone and Everything is going to be alright.

2. I don't blame you, but
You sold your soul for a few moments and $250.

It's ok, we've all done it. Just try not to do it again.

You could donate half that to ACLU, eh?

3. I was gonna say that if you are anywhere near New Haven CT you could come
to my house and fix my computer and we could talk like good liberals and have a great time. But then I saw you get $250 and eeek. Not that I blame you for earning a living, I don't, and I'm sure you are great...

That said, you can't worry about customers who are ignoramuses. You still have DU...

4. At that point
can't you just say that you *really* need to concentrate to get the job done correctly (lie, of course) and would they mind being quiet so they can get their money's worth.

5. You are not alone.
They are idiots and now in the minority. While I can't say that EVERYTHING is going to be alright, I can with certainty say that slowly, surely, many things are being righted.

Does that help?

6. You are NOT alone. Not sure if everything will be OK, though.
The Faux news/right wing lies are like poison, like cancer. More like a plague. Some of us here at DU have the stomach to take it and dish it back...some not - my view is that life is too short to have to expose one's self to more than is necessary. Hang in there! They lost, they KNOW they are wrong (or worse, are permanently afraid and brainwashed) - be thankful that you don't live in their tiny, horrible world!

8. You are not alone.
I do service calls also and have to listen to right wing crap ocassionally.
We live in Okla. Pretty Right Wing. Fox News loving. Anti-Global Warming.
We have a Woman in our local nursing home who writes letters to the editor pretty regularly. The Democrats are destroying the world.
Without the Democrats she would'nt be enjoying free Medicaid.
I do have a large number of Democratic friends though. We bounce things off of each other and shake out heads.

10. Give yourself a big pat on the back (literally or figuratively) for enduring this verbal assault
I can only imagine the stress! It is difficult to accept that there are such stunningly ignorant people walking among us, but sadly, there are more than we could ever imagine. Congrats on focusing on your job and not following through on your understandable and fully justifiable instinct to mess up their hard drive for all time to come. You did good!

DU goes a long way toward keeping me sane and functional. Glad it serves the same purpose for you, and I'm glad you're on the board. Always enjoy your posts. Keep the faith--you are not alone and with our continued commitment, everything will be all right!

Blessings.

11. I feel for you
My real estate agent is like this. He's a nice guy generally, but he feels the need to bring politics in every now and again. Even when we exchange business emails.

I finally made it clear to him that if he wants to talk politics, we'll go out for dinner one day and talk. But he needs to keep business and politics separate.

My suggestion to you, should you ever face such a situation again, is to say that discussing politics is not part of your job, and that you would love to discuss over a meal sometime. But for right now, you are getting distracted because this conversation is inappropriate for people who really don't know each other.

Also, next time set their browser homepage to www.alfranken.com before you leave! :)

17. I am very proud of you, wish I could have done that.
My situation is that I live in a marginally blue state, NC, and am surrounded by many freeper/redneck/ignoramus/Limbaugh lovers.
I have lost a lot of jobs, a lot of money by not being able to keep my mouth shut. On the other hand, I have also opened some eyes a bit, sewn seeds under the snow and watched them sprout, etc.

I'm trying to learn to keep my mouth more shut.

The only time I simply stared and let the man drive off was when a customer told me, after recounting being stopped by a policeman for speeding:
"And I did everything right, I handed him the registration for the gun along with my license, and let some dollar bills show. But he wrote me up anyway. I should have just shot the ni%^er."

Often I simply forget that people have guns. Especially people with a short trigger.

21. I live in NC
In Charlotte. I saw some "teabaggers" downtown the other day so I guess we have some silly people, but I never see them or interact with them. The people that I work with are cool - kind of mentally simple and not well-informed, but also not hardcore haters. Most of them are pro-Obama. Except for some of the accounting department, and even those are good and decent people.

Also, I grew up in Mount Airy and people there were cool and liberal - I think some were sort of Republican by default because their parents were, but they didn't exactly espouse any hardcore ignorant hateful beliefs.

What part do you live in?

not well enough to know about the people there.
Pilot Mountain, just 10 miles away, has lots of Democrats, old time Democrats.
At least that's how it was before I got divorced
:)

25. Was there no way to change the subject? It's baseball season
and how about the weather these days?

I had it almost worse. I was at a Democratic meeting and sitting with three old guys who thought the UnFairTax would be a good idea, but that it would never get passed because the rich people love all the loopholes of the current system.

Then later, after a guy running for Governor spoke about how thank goodness that after Reagan, we are no longer the tax and spend party, but that we are fiscally responsible and have to balance the Kansas budget. During the question period, the wife of one of the Democratic reps spoke up and went on and on about the drug wars and how we should be so scared of these drug cartels and how we need to pass the law for mandatory drug testing of welfare recipients.

And these are Democrats!!! (Sort of, many Kansas Democrats are very close to being moderate Republicans. My former county chair, who also ran for the state legislature wanted to bring "Americans for Prosperity" to speak to our group. He said they claimed to be non-partisan. I said "their whole platform for prosperity is based on Reaganomics, how are they non-partisan?")
