It's Official...I am Running for Governor of California

<SNIP> In San Francisco, we're showing what can be accomplished when we stop looking back and start looking for solutions.

We are the first, and still the only, city in America implementing universal health care. We're proving what you already knew - it is less expensive to keep people well than it is to treat their sicknesses.

<SNIP> The unemployment rate in California is soaring. But in San Francisco, the local economy is doing better because we helped attract new industries and new high-wage jobs. We are working together to grow our economy with a local stimulus plan that will put people back to work, starting with environmental initiatives and green-collar job training programs.

In San Francisco, we've done all of this while balancing our budgets - and our bond rating has gone up, thanks to sound fiscal management and a rainy day reserve.

<SNIP> The truth is, we can't keep returning to the same old, tired ideas and expect a different result. If we take a new approach, and recognize that we are all in this together, I believe we can put California on a new path toward a better future.

Join us in a new kind of campaign that gives all of us the tools we need to make change. Join us on Facebook, Twitter or at www.GavinNewsom.com. Make your voice heard and help us make real change.

Some of you already know me. You know I am not afraid to stand up and fight for what's right. From quality health care for everyone to equal rights for all Californians, I will do more than talk about problems - I will work with you to solve them.

We all know California can do better.

I think he can really win on "bringing back" many things he put in earlier that are needed now... Like free underground college education for Californians!

Gavin is also a great entry too though!

Just hoping that DiFi stays out of the fray (though getting her out of the Senate seat would be a plus!)

8. He is an utter dumbfuck
Just as bad as Mayor Photo-op Villagairosa in L.A.

The Democratic Party of CA can surely do better than either one of these assholes.

10. Will the same folks who go for the Terminator go for the clean cut, bright young man candidate?
I don't know that much about politics in California, except that they cut old, washed up actors a hell of a lot of slack.

14. Newsom is a fiscal conservative. If he can push that and avoid the gay marriage topic, he has a shot
The problem with California politics, as the Prop 8 fiasco so brilliantly demonstrated, is that this state is awash with people who describe themselves as "Social Liberals/Fiscal Conservatives". Arnold played that card well and got himself elected twice. Newsom has always been a fiscal conservative (he's a pro-business anti-socialist who just happens to be extremely liberal on social issues), and his positions have the potential to resonate with the same crowd that elected Arnold.

The problem is that the Rethugs are going to instantly play to one simple fact: Outside of the political circles, and outside of the Bay Area, few people really know anything about his politics. He's widely known throughout California as the "Gay Marriage Guy", and the Republicans are going to try their damndest to keep him hammered into that little hole. Newsoms challenege will be to get Californian's to look at the rest of his credentials.

And then, of course, there are the vast majority of us Democrats who want a candidate with actual liberal credentials and with experience in state government. Newsom will be running against both Jerry Brown and John Garamendi, both respected candidates, both with solid environmental records, and both with solid reputations among voters as progressive candidates who want to clean up California. Newsom's pro-business positions are going to be a hard-sell among many Democrats who are wanting to see some real liberalism in the California governors office.

Personally, I'm hoping that Garamendi knocks the snot out of Newsom in the election. The Sierra Club and other environmental groups agree with me, so I'm hoping that I'm not on the fringe with this one.
