Secession
http://larryjamesurbandaily.blogspot.com/2009/04/secession.html

Texas Governor Rick Perry got everyone fired up last week at a tax day "tea party." You can read The Dallas Morning News report on the event and the Governor's involvement in it here. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/041509dnmetteaparties.d8880855.html

Talk about something that makes you go "hmmmm"?

The last time a state leader talked about secession was right before the Civil War when South Carolina took steps to lead the entire South out of the Union. The breach in the fabric of the Republic that followed in 1861 had been preceded in 1832 by the so-called Nullification Crisis, a conflict based largely on differences of opinion about federal protective tariffs and economic policy at the time, with a obvious connection to the institution of slavery.

I'm wondering how this talk of and sympathy for secession as a state fits into any guidelines for "how to be patriotic" as citizens at the beginning of the 21st century?

It also seems most curious, but possibly not so outlandish on second thought, when one considers how the State of Texas ranks on "quality of life" issues for those at the bottom of the economy.

I understand that Jay Leno had some fun at our Governor's expense last week (watch the monologue here http://www.nbc.com/The_Tonight_Show_with_Jay_Leno/video/clips/monologue-041609/1088025/ ). No doubt a sure sign that Mr. Perry has made the "big time" on the national political stage!

Ain't politics something?

Thousands show up for
Dallas 'tea party';
Rick Perry fires up rallies

<<snip>>

Such moments encapsulated the spirit of area "Tax Day Tea Parties" – unapologetic public rallies that involved Republicans, conservatives and libertarians railing against government expansion, federal taxation and, ostensibly, the government of Democratic President Barack Obama.

<<snip>>

At one point, Davis piped nationally syndicated conservative columnist Michelle Malkin through the event's audio system via a Blackberry handset.

"If the White House didn't know we existed before, they do today," Malkin said.

<<snip>>

(Governor)Perry dismissed characterizations that those attending Wednesday's "tea party" rallies in Texas and around the country are "a bunch of right-wing extremists."

"But if you are, I'm with you," he said.

During the speech, people waved "Don't Tread on Me" flags and signs lampooning the Obama administration's economic stimulus efforts. Some shouted, "Secede!"

Among the signs: "Obama. Liar in Chief" and "I'll Keep My Guns and Money. You Can Keep the Change."

Perry told reporters following his speech that Texans might get so frustrated with the government they would want to secede from the union.

1. Perry is maybe trying to fend off Kay Bailey, who wants his job, by
cranking up the Crackpot Machine to energize the nut vote, or maybe he is trying to cast himself as a "principled" "independent" for a possible 2012 indy run at the White House.

"I'll weird-out in public; you send me a check."

Hard to tell, given that Perry is such a tormented soul to begin with. He's shrewd but not intelligent and public but not personable.

And certainly a bit of an idiot.

5. They now seem to be...
throwing everything they can find against the wall to see if anything will stick.

6. Yes. May the gods forgive me, but I hope they wind up throwing things
at each other with such fury that they dissolve as a political party and never darken the door of our democracy again.

I won't miss 'em one iota.

9. Hi, ashling. That sounds right. Kay Bailey definitely has her heart set on
his job, so maybe he just has to behave like a crazy person to get the nutbags to whip out their checkbooks.

God, Texas politics is a monster truck show sometimes.

7. Why would secession be a good solution?
Edited on Sat Apr-25-09 02:45 PM by alarimer
Texas gets more in federal funds than it pays, one of those red vampire states. Become an independent state and we lose that.

Perry is living proof that hair products reduce intelligence. Although I doubt that he was much smarter before he started dying his hair.

15. Actually, Texas pays in more than it receives.
It's one of the few states where that is the case.

11. Oil refining capacity
That's the only real downside I see from a Texas secession. But we could build that up elsewhere. We could also pull out all of our military and NASA installations and benefit other hard hit parts of the country. It would be a shame--parts of Texas are beautiful and it has a cool cultural legacy--but if that's what they want to do I say let 'em do it. They'd either become a complete banana republic, with soaring poverty rates, or they'd end up paying higher taxes than they would if they'd just stayed put. And we could kick the Dallas Cowboys out of the NFL!

17. I doubt Texas would actually secede,
Although, given the way a lot of them think and whine (not ALL of them, as I'm sure the're some that don't think like the rest in the state; I'm just talking about the wingnuts that are there) and the govenor's and public's sentiment, it's possible. I just really don't think we can handle a second Civil War/another secession, given the problems in the world we have already.

18. Polls here show Texas citizens as a whole do not want to secede.
Perry's just desperate for attention, fearing Kay Bailey.
