A side of this flu story our media is ignoring and I am not surprised by this either |
|
There are elections, federal elections in Mexico in July.
The campaign has even made our Presidential campaign look squeaky clean... yep, I had to take a shower after seeing some of the adds... though I'll give it to IFE, they were running a top notch get involved campaign... and that is in a country with voting ratios of 70% and up... I went, I want that in the states..
Realize one reason the PRI finally lost to FOX and the PAN was the 1986 quake and what the Mexican people saw as a very lax and slow response
Oh and if you think you guys distrust your government, you haven't lived
A recent poll found the trust in Mexican politicals parties at 21% the President a little higher, and the Army and the Church in the upper 70s and low 80s
Think about it.
Oh noes, I can hold two thoughts in my head....
:sarcasm:

3. Distrust in the Feds is a national sport down there |
|
does not matter who stole what or when...
And has been going on for decades... didn't start after the last presidential election
As to anger... been there done that, no... they are not that angry.
It actually makes the distrust of our feds look mild... and it is all over strata of society... from indians in the street (the stories I've heard from some would make your skin crawl) to the higher reaches of society

the last elections are only a mode of discussion for a small minority of people... that said this makes it to the news talk, like when the lefty Congressman said to Obama that it was time to open direct talks with the Mexican left (at which point we all went... that was funny. He won't talk to the American left, but this guy expects him to talk to the Mexican Left? Implied AMLO... that is a good joke)
Like here with bush, and we knew it was stolen, it is a non story for most of the population.. keeping a job, putting food on table, quite higher in the priority list
Now this will be a katrina moment, after it is well passed... fer the same reasons the Mexico City quake became a singular moment
Suffice it to say the PAN had come to striking distance in the elections... I doubt they will keep many seats at this point

6. during their last election I didn't get my news from US TV |
|
NarcoNews is a good site plus a number of others report and show video news south of the US border.

you know people who voted in that election?
I was also down there (for a family funeral) while the recounting was ongoing
And it was amusing, most of the AMLO supporters were upper or middle class
The ones supporting the PAN (in that small sample) were lower class
One of the really down and out ladies put it this way
AMLO promises much, and at times his goons force people to give them money
I thought that was fascinating
We also saw things like a PANISTA car run over an AMLO supporter (car) and then we saw the same thing, reversed...
Emotions were running a little high

DUers will never listen to reason about Mexico. Anyhow, I saw a recent poll showing the PRI is gaining ground as a result of the economic crisis, not the PRD, and I suspect this trend will show through with the health crisis, as well.
