Regarding the flyovers, maybe the pentagon thought most people are decent human beings who
would mind their own business, and not be concerned with things that aren't their business.

1. There's no people more apt to mind their own business than NYers
and I can sure understand why they might conside a low flying jet in Manhattan followed by fighter planes to be their business.

2. Are you kidding me? A jumbo jet flying low and slow over Manhattan,
and you're calling people busybodies?

I think I'd be a bit concerned, too.

3. So you never had a plane fly over your head and kill a couple thousand?
You should try it sometime. Has the most amazing affect on your reaction to planes overhead.

I would think that one's likely death is always one's own business. Now why would you assume that a decent person would not be afraid of death?

Oh, wait. Maybe you don't know THAT PLANES ARE FORBIDDEN TO FLY OVER MANHATTAN. And people who live here know that planes don't belong in our sky. The one time since 9/11 that a plane did fly around the Statue of Liberty, it crashed into a building but managed NOT to kill two thousand or so. Just two or so.

So when New Yorkers see a plane overhead, we know something is very very wrong.

7. I am aware of those facts. But there are people who have the responsibility to deal with those
things.

If one isn't one of those people and still feels those things are their business and they have to be answered to, you know right off hand what their three favorite words are: 1. Me 2. Me 3. Me.

22. What assurances can one have that the people who have the responsibility
to deal with these things are dealing with these things? None!

Even in my small city a 747 flying low over the downtown area with a military escort would probably cause some excitement. I can only imagine the memories that this callous and ill-conceived act revived in the people who were in or near the trade center the last time large planes flew low over NYC.

airplanes in the sky their business.

Sheesh.

29. From someone who works in NYC...
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2009/04/on_that_flyover_idea.php

I actually work on a very high floor in 1 Liberty Plaza. The window to my back overlooks the WTC site and the Hudson river. This morning as I was working a co-worker came by my desk and started staring out the window. At first I had no idea what he was staring at so he pointed to the plane. By that time it was far away enough and when he told me that it was pretty low and close to the buildings in lower Manhattan I thought he might just be overreacting a little until the plane did its second (of what I think was 3) fly over. My co-worker said that he was pretty sure that it was Air Force One based on the colors but I didn't think anyone at the White House would be so completely brain dead to allow that to happen.

Whoever thought this was a good idea is a total idiot. Whoever thought it was a good idea to do this without mentioning anything about it to the public is a bigger idiot. If I'd gotten a memo the week before informing me this was going to take place I probably would have watched and thought 'hey that's pretty cool.' Instead I watched and thought 'I hope that plane doesn't crash into my building.' Followed by the thought 'I hope that plane doesn't hit one of the buildings in Jersey City' followed by 'If this isn't terrorism related why is that plane flanked by a fighter jet?'

And lets not even start with what the guys working at the WTC site must have been thinking.

18. This is just a wind-up, yes?
The premise is so laughable I can only assume you are trying to make some point that isn't clear to me, due no doubt to the failure of the internet to convey subtle contextual clues. Let us in on the gag will you?

A wind up that is.

It's interesting to think about things in that universe but I wouldn't want to live there.

8 years ago, similar low flying planes slammed into buildings and killed 3000 people.

Who are those buffoons for getting nervous at seeing something like that?
