DeMint: We Lost Pennsylvania Because 'Forced Unionization' Caused Republicans To Flee
By Brian Beutler - April 29, 2009, 9:18AM

There are two competing interpretations of Arlen Specter's move into the Democratic party. It's not clear why they're competing, because they're not by any means mutually exclusive. In fact, they're deeply connected. But that's how it's playing out: Either Specter became a Democrat because the Republicans moved too far to the right or Specter became a Democrat because he was facing a career ending primary in 2010. Strangely enough, even though Specter himself insists both factors contributed to his decision, very few people seem to have absorbed this.

One of those people is Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), who says the Republican party's hitting the sweet spot. He attributes the non-viability of the Republican party in state's like Pennsylvania to the fact that voters have fled "forced unionization" in the northeast for the safety and comfort of the southern motherland.

Seriously.

But don't mistake DeMint for a crank. He's actually a consummate optimist. He says "Pat Toomey, who is running in Pennsylvania, is one of the most maintream Americans I know." And surely all those diaspora northerners will repatriate Pennsylvania when they realize that the "mainstream" is on the rise and "forced unionization" will no longer beleaguer the tea-loving masses.

3. Republicans, like children, say the darnedest things.
With the edge on "intelligence" going to children, of course.

4. He's an idiot.
I think he opens his mouth and whatever words are near come rushing out. He only has a set number rambling around. He and his partner in crime, Mark Sanford, are of the same ilk.
They both are trying to take the state of SC back to the 19th century. Skip the 20th.

5. DeMint means the safety and comfort of lower wages in the southern motherland.

6. I've seen a lot of people bitch about union dues, but never have I seen one person quit because of..
them, let alone flee a geographical area. Businesses on the other hand have pulled up root and left and I've seen plenty who had to follow the jobs.

8. If a non-union construction worker, for example,
makes $20 an hour less in wages and benefits compared to a union construction worker, the non-union worker is essentially paying dues, approximately $40,000 a year.
