I'm supposed to fly this weekend......omg |

Is there any chance that if I keep hand sanitizer with me, wipe everything down with them, and be really careful I can avoid this flu???

dust mask. Tell them you have asthma and want to wear it on plane for protection...but then again they may think you have the flu..I would call and ask if you can wear a mask for protection.

3. Your chance of getting this flu eventually is probably 30 - 40% |
|
If you get it sooner, you'll get better care.

4. Can you hold your breath for 3 hours? |
|
They recirculate cabin air over and over so you're gonna get sick my friend.
I wonder if I haven't already had the Swine Flu this year.
I went to NYC back in early March from Orlando and got sick (as I always do) immediately upon my return and was pretty ill for about 2-1/2 to 3 weeks there after.

7. That's what I'm afraid of.. |

It's easy to get sick when you travel anyway - from just getting tired and run down.
I wonder if I should cancel...I hate to do that, but I have asthma, and this stuff is potentially very serious for someone like me.

10. Just treat it like any other flu. |
|
If you get sick you will feel like refried shit for a bit, but you will be OK in a few days. You'll still be blah for a week or so.
Relax and enjoy your trip.

18. I'm flying in a couple of weeks and I asked my GP about this. |
|
He said that unless someone is coughing/sneezing in the seats immediately around you, it's not likely you'd catch anything. In that case the best thing to do is ask the flight attendants to move either them or you.
Other than that, he said it's the usual flu routine -- hand sanitizer, don't touch people/stuff, lots of hand washing, and stay hydrated. Especially important on a plane because the air is so dry.
Have you thought about asking your doc for a script for Tamiflu or Relenza ahead of the fact? You probably won't have to use it, but it might give you a little peace of mind.

21. I looked at airfares this past Monday (they'd gone up), then |
|
Tuesday they were down... I wondered if it was a reaction to the flu issue - seemed odd that prices would drop after they'd doubled.
Anyway, I booked my flight for late June. Don't know what things will be like then.
I am probably one of the least likely people to catch this flu - I spend most of my time in my home/studio, venturing out every other week or so for groceries or supplies. I usually go to the store at odd ours (very early or very late) because I'm not good with driving when traffic is heavy (vestigial fear from a bad accident).
But, I was out today and went to the grocery store and a pharmacy. It was weird because I was SO aware of all the "community" surfaces we share in public places:
The pen to sign for a prescription, the keypad/stylus to pay by credit/debit card, the push bar or pull handle on the store entrance (if it isn't automatic), the grocery cart or basket...
The woman behind me in line coughed all over me and I debated with myself over whether it would be rude or not to politely say something given the constant warnings (I didn't say anything, but I bought that flipping hand sanitizer (that I really dislike) and used it...
I fly a LOT and end up spending a fair amount of time in airplanes, airports and (unfortunately) airport restrooms. If you wash your hands like a trouper and then handle a little dial or lever to release paper towels to dry your hands on, you've defeated your own cleanliness. I'm no germophobe - I've always had the view that we go overboard with that. You can't build up resistance/immunity if you sterilize your environment all the time. But we're dealing with a potential health risk and it helps to just be a little more aware and take responsibility (for ourselves as well as those around us) in public. Even if we weren't facing a possible pandemic of indeterminate danger thus far - we should take responsibility anyway. My guess is most of us do.
I'm comfortable with my own ability to take precautions I can control within reason, but it really irks me - given the media coverage of a probable health risk, especially (and until we know more) - that people who cough or sneeze can't or won't take measures to keep the spray contained. That's just infuriating, even if you're not anywhere near a plane... an uncovered sneeze could dangerously affect someone who's elderly or has a compromised immune system - even if you don't. It's wrong and it goes beyond rude. But this should be SOP regardless of this H1N1 virus.
It seems as though the media has created more of an emergency than is justified - maybe I'm wrong but it seems that way. I've read that there are less than 10 confirmed deaths from this flu in Mexico per the WHO, and the 150+ are unconfirmed or attributable to other complications. If the media is relaying facts, I just wish they were more accurate about things like this. Listening/watching the news nonstop doesn't automatically mean one is well-informed. Not unless the information being relayed is accurate (or corrected as necessary). Conflicting data just promotes more fear and panic.
