2. Total strawman.
No asked for a zebra-striped SCJ, everything else seems solid though.

5. Not funny.
Why do so many straight white men enjoy mocking the desire of minority Americans to see themselves reflected in the faces that run our government?

6. What straight white men..
are you talking about? Seeing how character and content are not an issue...why not let a computer pick the next Justice?

7. Straight white men like so many here on DU who think posts like the OP are comical.
Oh, that's right. How do we know there isn't already a justice meeting all of OP's listed qualifications already on the Supreme Court?

12. Well I'm not a straight white male..
and I think the OP is comical in a sick kind of way in that people think a person's character and worth are judged by their race, creed, or sexual orientation. It's all a game, and it's pathetic.

9. If they want to change the look and work of our government, then they should get involved
in the elections.

The supreme court is not an election. It is an appointment FOR LIFE. I want someone chosen based on them having the best qualifications and understanding of how our nation's laws work, not a penis or vagina. Not their skin color. Not their ethnicity. Not their religion. Not even their last name.

...unless it's Bush...

13. The elected portion of government is a miniscule number compared to the appointees.
If we don't pressure the straight white men for change in the unelected part of government, we won't ever see anything but straight white men in those positions. What will elections do for minorities like LGBT Americans? Some of us can't even get our own parents to vote in favor of us having equal marriage rights.

18. But who approves the appointed people? The elected portion.
If you don't win the elected positions, you'll never win the appointed ones.

I know how wonderful it would be to have a supporting network of family, friends, businesses and governments for the GLBT community.

But Barney Frank has proven that gay people can get elected. I'm not saying throw your hat into the ring for California's Senator, but if by starting local, individuals can have influence.

Besides, how do we know that a gay justice would be pro-feminism? Or African Americans? Or Latinos? Or pro-gun control?

By limiting ourselves to only one group of people, we not only exclude other, qualified people, but we also exclude other minorities. It's essentially telling a group "wait your turn!"

We should focus on winning the elections. Because then we can stop the crazy appointees and send a message that we want liberal ones who respect all others.

We need the best person, regardless of the color of their skin or what they have between their legs.

This is too important a decision to leave to simply "Who has what traits?"

11. Funny, but true. There are too many minorities to try to do proportional seating on the bench
If you want proportional representation, Congress is the place to do it.

16. straight white men are terrified that they will find themselves
in the minority and be treated as poorly they treated others. The golden rule is tossed aside when you taste power.

20. Uh, I'm not a straight white man.
And I don't have a problem with treating everyone equally.

I just think that 1.) The most qualified person should be chosen, and 2.) That you can't represent every minority on the bench.

Instead, focus on finding #1

23. I know Obama can't please everyone. All he needs to do is please 51
Senators. He will pick the best person for the job. If a Hispanic woman is the best person for the job, then fine. I don't care about all those qualifiers such and race, gender, sexual orientation when it comes the court. I want a person who respects our constitution and never forgets that what he/she decides affects real live people.

22. Why is race/gender/sexual orientation/religion the key thing for someone that YOU CAN'T FIRE?
Once they're on the bench, they're on, barring impeachment.

It's virtually impossible to remove a justice. It should be a long, thoughtful process on who is the most educated, knowledgeable and wise person for the job.

Cause we can't undo this.

P.S. I don't want the Dem's version of Souter.
