Bellevue, NE - A Bellevue woman is charged with DUI and leaving and infant home alone after her arrest near the Kennedy Freeway Thursday morning.

Sarpy County deputies tell Action 3 News 30-year-old Krista Kay Stires left her three-and-a-half month old baby home while she went to buy alcohol, at 7:50 a.m. Deputies stopped her near the Kennedy Freeway.

The baby is now in state custody. This is Stires fourth DUI arrest. She also faces child abuse charges and driving with a suspended or revoked license. She will remain in jail until at least her next court day scheduled for Monday.

4. just a thought.......
If ONE woman reads this, and THAT ONE woman leaves her infant home alone while she goes out to buy booze, AND THAT ONE woman realizes she could lose her baby due to her problem, then MAYBE she will get help.
Lots of "ifs" there, but strange things happen.

5. It's... uh, a news story? It deals with a lot of interesting discussion issues?
Alcohol abuse? Addiction? Child endangerment? Irresponsibility?

It's not like this is typical, and every mother of a newborn does this sort of thing. It's a tragedy. That makes it interesting.

You can always hide the thread if it bugs you, you know.

16. Alcohol ages you pretty fast too..
And people vary a lot in how fast they age anyway.

People with progeria usually die of old age by about twenty or so.

17. Her face isn't sucked in and she looks rather healthy

She hasn't even been convicted but now accused of using Meth. I've done and been around meth users, one of the first things it does is it sucks your face in. Though not everyone has this effect, I ran into overweight meth users though that can be explained as people develop a tolerance to it rather quickly.

8. Ok, I'll take a swing at this. Is it worse to leave one kid alone for a few minutes to pick up...
booze, or to leave two kids alone for an entire shift (presumably 8 hours) of work?

9. Ok, I'll take a swing at something else. Is is worse to leave a child alone for a few minutes to
pick up booze, or put the child in the car with you driving drunk?

12. Oh, how about this one: is it ethical for police to arrest and detain a negligent mother...
and thereby increase the amount of time this child went without supervision, or should they have driven her straight home upon hearing she had a child waiting?

14. I read the link, and did not see an answer to this, but is it possible
that the arresting officers called their dispatcher who then contacted the local child protective services to send a representative to rescue the child? Or maybe even the police dispatcher sent another patrol car?

I would imagine as soon as the police stopped her she started wailing about the baby at home, thus alerting the arresting officers to take some sort of action.

Perhaps?

15. Or maybe she was mum about the kid, not wanting to turn a mere DUI into a child negligence case.
In such a situation should amnesty be offered to negligent parents, so that they don't hide things like this and expose the child to more risk?

18. Fourth DUI arrext, no license. That's probably jail time, and would
cause massive tears looking for sympathy. Anyone stupid enough (no license, multiple DUI) to drive in that situation would not hesitate to try to use a kid at home as a plea to "Oh, please let me go officer. My baby is home alone."

Three priors is not "mere DUI." DUI kills innocent folks as well as the driver, you know.

The baby is safe now. Problem solved. Let the woman dry out in a cell for several months.

10. She was drunk - and going to buy more booze at 7:50 in the morning?
I'm guessing she won't be up for Mother of the Year.
