Will Punch really shutter the Boston Globe?
The NYT corporation has filed a notice of intent to shut down the Globe, with the feds. Will the NYT really pull the plug on the Globe? I can't imagine that this is anything but a cynical attempt to pound away at union members, but then again the NYT is in dire straits.

1. Even if it isn't shuttered, it will be diminished
I used to be a Globe subscriber when I lived in Boston.

I have been a Tribune subscriber here in Chicago, and I can tell you that the quality of the paper has taken a precipitous nosedive over the last year as reporters were laid off and the paper has veered toward "USA Today" or tabloid-type status.

I was many years ago a subscriber to the Buffalo Courier-Express. Cowles media bought it and started putting heavy demands on the union. Together, from the editors down to the pressmen, they rejected the new owners' demands. And the paper closed. This was back in 1982. Those guild members knew they were giving up their jobs, but they stood strong together rather than cower.

2. Its Pinch not Punch and I have no doubt he will close the paper, its hemorrhaging money
and no one will buy it. There is no requirement to keep pouring funds in to a money pit.

3. Pinch, right. I don't think he'll
shutter it, I think he's just trying to put the screws to the unions. and the NYT itself is a money pit.

4. They are both currenty sinkholes, but the Globe is worse in terms of percentages
It also lacks a patron, which the NYT has. I figure its just about gone at this point.
