Chanel, world's oldest dog, has her day

Wed May 6, 5:49 pm ET

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) – Chanel, the world's oldest dog, celebrated her 21st birthday on Wednesday with a certificate from the Guinness Book of Records and a visit to a dog hotel and spa.

The dachshund, a rescue dog from Port Jefferson in New York, wore an orange sweater and red goggles as her owner, Denice Shaughnessy, accepted the award marking her longevity.

"Chanel is the Guinness world record holder for the oldest living dog," said Jamie Panas, a spokeswoman for Guinness.

The record authority reviewed a veterinarian's certificate, statements from four witnesses and photographs to verify Chanel's age, Panas explained.

Chanel became the world's oldest dog following the death of Butch, the 28-year-old former record holder, in 2003.

Though visibly nervous and shaking at times, Chanel posed for photographers as she sat on a red mini-sofa.

Shaughnessy said Chanel tires quickly, wears goggles for cataracts when she is in the sun, and booties to cushion a benign tumor on her hind leg.

My baby is a 15 y/o black and tan. She's about 1/3 grey/white already.

4. I'd love to know what she eats.
I wonder if that would silence the ongoing debate between kibble, raw food, grain-free, etc. I wish something would!!

11. As would I.
I use Prairie line from Nature's Variety with my dog. Her system did NOT like raw and grain free food, but one foster dog benefited from raw while the other did well on grain free. So, yeah, I'm super interested in her diet.

34. My dad had an Irish setter that lived to be >23...
as well as a runt of a cat (sweet as hell) that always looked to be a kitten that was just as old.

To my horror, he once showed me the dozen or so $1/pack packs of hot dogs he fed the dogs as a treat. Other than cheap kibble, they found their own food on his 110 acres. It must've been the water.

21. Great Dogs
I had a wiener dog that lived to be 19. I was living in Germany as a child on the 23rd floor of an apartment building and he was the perfect dog!

23. What a beautiful puppy!
She's welcome to play with "my little girl" (passed away at 15 y.o. on 7 Apr) when she finally gets to Doggie Heaven.

No hurry - but my Miss. Taro will be waiting for Chanel so she can show her around "da place"

She looked so cute with her bandanna. It's always hard to lose a pet, they ARE like part of the family.

30. Yes, thank-you. BTW I found a site for Chanel that has many cool PICS.
Also it relays the fact that she was once "red" but her coat faded out to "white" years ago.

Chanel's so beautiful and I can tell from her owner's face that she's very proud of her girl. :loveya:

This post made me happy at the end of an otherwise shitty day.
I've always thought it cruel that dogs die so young. You go, Chanel!
