In abrogating torture, ordering the Guantanamo prison camp closed, and setting a deadline for withdrawing troops from Iraq, Obama is turning the page on a dark chapter in American statecraft. After the hectoring and posturing that figured so prominently in his predecessor's style, the president's preference for dialogue rather than preaching is refreshing.

The sins of omission are telling: There is no indication that Obama will pose basic questions about the purpose of the US military; on the contrary, he has implicitly endorsed the proposition that keeping America safe is best accomplished by maintaining in instant readiness forces geared up to punish distant adversaries or invade distant countries. Nor is there any indication that Obama intends to shrink the military's global footprint or curb the appetite for intervention that has become a signature of US policy.

1. Obama clearly has an opinion different than the authors - how is that a sin of any sort

Does he need to voice everything? Should he just let the military crumble before negotiating toward such events? Does the writer believe that after thousands of years of aggression through military action can all of a sudden just magically cease because one world leader wishes it so?

Lots of holes in that.

3. No one should be surprised that Obama is no more than luke-warm water.

It's sad because he really is a good guy. We had the same thing in Colorado: we took over the state from the Republicans. Yet the Democrats were unable to do anything because they are all whores to business.

In Washington they are also whores to the Military Industrial complex, the financial banksters, and everyone except the AMerican people.

It is all about campaign finance reform. If we don't do that, nothing else good will ever follow. We have a great president--yet no action. That should be proof enough.
