Blackmail and threats to avoid accountability...

This is so shameful it is beyond description:

"At a hearing today with Attorney General Eric Holder, Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee suggested that any potential criminal investigation into the CIA's harsh interrogation methods might not easily be contained.

Both Lamar Alexander of Tennessee and Richard Shelby of Alabama pressed Holder on the CIA's "rendition" program that moved terrorism suspects from one country to another.

Didn't that happen during the Clinton administration?
Yes, Holder said.

"How many did you approve?" they asked.
Holder said he'd check the record.

The clear suggestion was, if any criminal investigation is opened, Republicans would push to get it expanded beyond events during the Bush administration. Alexander, for example, asked several times whether members of Congress, who were told about the interrogation methods, should also be investigated."

Sorry? Are Alexander/Shelby saying that if you investigate our (Republican's) current crimes, then we will investigate alleged crimes from nearly a decade ago when you (Democrats') had the presidency? Yes, that is exactly what they are saying. Now I have a few questions for Lamar Alexander and for Richard Shelby, who should both be marched out of government and escorted back to whomever is putting pressure on them:

1. If Clinton committed crimes, why did the Republicans not go after him then (aside from the oral sex issue), when he was in office?

2. Are you saying, Mr. Alexander/Mr. Shelby, that the rule of law means that you won't investigate Democrats as long as they don't investigate Republicans?

3. What is your oath of office Mr. Alexander/Mr. Shelby? Do you recall?

4. Where are you willing to draw the line Mr. Alexander/Mr. Shelby? Can we go all the way to Iran Contra as well or further? Or how about BCCI or even to Operation 40? Because I sure as hell don't mind. Let's rip it all open then, shall we? In fact, how about we keep going after the Jack Abramoff scandal which should have nabbed Mr. Shelby already, but for some reason did not (perhaps a Canary had something to do with it?).

If Mr. Holder should find criminal activity on the part of former President Clinton, then so be it. Either we are a nation of laws or we are a failed experiment in democracy.

2. Fuck it! Get it all out then.
Then we can clean house and start running the country like it is suppose to be run, instead of "insurance policies" for those at the top.

15. I would humbly suggest that JFK's assassination be the starting point.
Getting to the truth about what really happened to JFK would be the modern day equivalent of the Rosetta Stone in relation to understanding modern history.

27. Just open up the CIA files for public scrutiny.
That is what they are doing with the STASI files in the former East Germany (to a limited extent). Because this started with the protection of former top NAZIs after WWII.

It was a slippery slope from there. Crime is an addiction. The criminal does one act, thinks the thrill and the loot are worth it, and the crimes get more and more involved.

3. Repubs prove they're only interested in the law when it's convenient to them.
Again.

I honestly don't care if investigations into war crimes leave us with nothing but congressional pages dusting the seats in Congress. We have NO government worth mentioning when these kinds of actions are abided by either party and used to hobble the system.

Billy Boy Kristol has voiced this 'threat'.

It can't be threatening if you're all for it.

Open the door of the dirty closet. Let all the junk come out.

didn't they do anything about it? Who are they representing, anyway?

And for good measure, let's ask Porter Goss if we should go all the way back to Operation 40.

Edited on Thu May-07-09 01:32 PM by WeDidIt
George Walker Bush is the LEAST investigated president in history.

Clinton was guilty of poor judgement in a sexual matter.

Bush is guilty of war crimes.

Go figure.

9. They are making a very big mistake to try to blackmail Obama
or anyone in his administration. They mistake his civility
for weakness at their own peril.

OBama will bring them down.

It's long past time to wash up after the last eight years.

If not now, I pray that someday it will be done.

It must be done or we are doomed to repeat it again.

20. This seems more like an attempt to alter the debate with unfounded innuendo for their base.
Now the radio talk shows can start falsely saying, "It started with Clinton."
This is totally bogus, and everyone "should" understand that.

Let the rule of law and the investigatory
process prevail.

It's the ONLY right thing to do.

Anything else would be cowardly, craven,
and utterly wrong.

That doesn't seem right. And the vast majority at DU seem to agree that Democrats shouldn't get a pass:

32. Total agreement here!
Well said!

I vote for the Democratic Party because I am a patriot. I will not shield members of my party who swore to protect the Constitution from all enemy's. I do not want anything to do with a leader that will 100% sacrifice my honor for a 1/2% chance of protecting my life.

Go ahead and open the whole game up! I wonder how many Republicans will be left after the dust clears?
