Baby Dies After Pacifier Taped To His Mouth
Edited on Thu May-07-09 01:40 PM by Mr. Ected
Authorities say the foster mother of a 9-month-old boy who died when she taped a pacifier to his mouth faces charges.

Investigators say neonatal nurse Angela Dukes was in her first day caring for the boy on Feb. 8. They say she tried to quiet him but the taped pacifier blocked his breathing and he died that day.

State Law Enforcement Division spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons says the 30-year-old Dukes of Columbia was charged Wednesday with felony unlawful conduct toward a child.

Officials say Dukes is in the Richland County jail awaiting a bond hearing. It wasn't immediately clear if she had an attorney.

A woman identifying herself as Dukes' mother said she didn't want to talk about the arrest.

Did I get that straight? A neonatal nurse did this?

6. Little kids can be annoying....I was.
My parents kept a bucket full of pacifiers next to my crib because, apparently, if I didn't have one in my mouth and one in each hand at all times I'd scream bloody murder...and it was a lot easier to grab one out of the bucket than to look onder the crib in the middle of the night for the one I'd dropped.

That said, it's generally a bad idea to tape ANYTHING into a baby's mouth.

9. Agreed. I'm still difficult.
My "pacifiers" are a little larger now (I keep two of them in the garage)...but I've at least given up the bucket beside the crib..

:)
