BRENTWOOD — A 17-year-old girl had to be airlifted to a local hospital Tuesday evening after she was run over by her own car while trying to "ghost ride," a car stunt popularized in the East Bay, police said.

"Ghost riding" typically entails a car owner walking or dancing alongside or on top of a vehicle that is idling forward without a driver. The stunt has local origins, particularly in the Bay Area rap scene radiating from Oakland and Vallejo.

The injured girl was "performing a horseplay maneuver" as her 1980s-model Chevrolet Blazer idled along about 6 p.m. near San Jose Avenue and Stonewood Drive, said Brentwood police Sgt. Mark Misquez.

With music blaring from the vehicle, the girl apparently was standing on a footstep on the driver's side while the SUV crept forward, Misquez said. At some point she slipped, lost her grip and fell to the ground, and shortly after the vehicle ran over her upper legs, he said.

The girl was taken by helicopter to a local trauma center and while her injuries are serious, they do not appear to be life-threatening, Misquez said.

-------------------------

"We wouldn't recommend folks doing this type of thing," Misquez said. "This is what can happen."

1. "Upper legs"? She narrowly missed her Darwin Award, from the sound of it.

15. Why would a parent give a 17 year old
an SUV in the first place. Few 17 year olds have the required judgement. Add to that the thinking of the UTube generation and you end up with stupidity like this.

3. I would be livid if this was my child
The mom in me is VERY glad this young idiot is still alive. The mom in me also wants to scream at her for her stupidity.

I know every generation will find new and creative ways to be stupid, but running yourself over with your own car will be a hard one for future generations to top. I hope.

5. On the upside, this story makes me feel way better about my misspent youth.
I did some damned stupid shit, but I never once ran over my own legs with a Chevy Blazer. :eyes:

7. I was a fucktard for helping somebody steal their car from an impound lot
and we got away with it by the way... but it seems "Generation Jackass" has overtaken all who came before in their lust to be the next youtube star.

13. The attitude displayed by the girl comes with youth - "It will never happen to me. I'm too skillful"
I would bet that an hour after the ambulance and police left the scene, someone else was ghost riding their car.

Edited on Sat May-09-09 07:13 AM by hobbit709
but "ghost riding" or anything near that level was never on the list. I might have driven down 50mph roads at 90mph but at least I was IN the car.

19. Did you ever go hood sledding?
Mid 70s -- after a big snow, pulling an upside down hood behind a car with a chain.

30. More like "It will never happen to me. I'm a teenager and I'm immortal."
And you're probably right. Oh, maybe the ghost riding party broke up THAT night, but a few nights later...and of course the next bunch of kids that does it will be telling the story of the girl who ran herself over purely as a scary story to freak out the others with. It will be something that happened once, a long time ago. But don't let it stop YOU from trying.

16. I wouldn't have been able to do this in the rattle-trap I drove when I was 17.
The Pinto always pulled to the right, and would stall out if I took my foot off the gas.

Edited on Sat May-09-09 10:34 AM by juno jones
No gas pedal and no-one to operate the clutch...it would stall right out.

Maximum speed: 50 MPH
6 volt electric: No lights at night.

Cool as hell, but only really good for transportation to school.

I suspect my dad was a smart guy. :)

On edit: PS: You survived a Pinto? LOL!

18. I had one I had to start that way
Push it down the hill, run along side, jump through the driver's side window (door wouldn't open), and pop the clutch.

I won't even discuss the car that I could never remember there was no reverse.

21. Awwww, high schoolers do the cutest things...
(they're high and really need TO be in school)

Just like the fecesfaces who thought it was cool to do what was done in that movie from 1985 and lie down in the middle of the road and risk getting turned into roadkill... which included some lamebrain neighbors, who thought it would be fun to use black trash bags, get into them, and lie down into the road. Sadly, mom saw the cretins and missed... the little idiots are probably CEOs... or got knocked up at the age of 15, I don't know...

26. She's 17. She either had narcolepsy and slept through intro to physics class...
or, as Chris Rock would put it, she's a "damn fool". (that was a great skit from how HBO show, circa 2000...)

32. New label for an old activity.
My highschool boyfriend once drove by the athletic field one day while I was out at PE. At least, his friend drove. The boyfriend rode the hood, "surfing" and screaming "HEY,_____________" so that the rest of my class, and my coach, all stopped and turned to stare at me.

Thankfully, he didn't fall.

A generation later, his own son (and mine,) at the end of his freshman year in high school, decided he didn't want to walk down the 300 yards of dirt road to our gate. He asked a neighbor for a ride; a junior who had a car. He sat on the hood of the car, rode down the road until he fell off and the car ran over him. The front wheel landed on his chest.

I'm grateful the driver had recently given up his old american car for a lighter little japanese model. He had to lift the car off my son, and then call me at work to tell me about it.

How many people get a call from a neighbor saying "I ran over your son?"

Maybe this girl's parents. At least the car was only idling, rolling forward, rather than going faster.

A broken collar bone and wrist, and way too much road rash, which left scars that can still be seen today at 29, and my son survived. I've always been grateful. A colleague I was working with at the time lost her son to another stunt like that a few years earlier.

I'm glad the girl survived, and I wish we could find a cure for the delusions of immortality and addiction to the adrenaline rush that too many young people suffer from.
