Wily on personal responsibility
This poses the questions:
If a student does poorly on a test or in their school work, is that a reflection on the teacher or the student?

Likewise in the business world, if an employee isn't performing where they should be is that a reflection on the employee or their supervisor?

It will be interesting to see where he goes with this

1. Those who teach know the answer:
There is no single answer.

Sometimes, the teacher clearly fails the students by improperly preparing them for the exam in front of them, writing a vague exam, or horrendous grading. Sometimes the students don't prepare, improperly prepare, cannot fathom the material, or simply lack talent.

In all but the rarest of circumstances, a failing student is a team effort with a slight edge going to the student. Teachers should be perceive when a student is struggling, and mechanisms should be in place to provide a safety net. But, by and large, the students are in a far better position to control their fate than the teachers.

2. It really is no different in management
Yet someone is always trying to blame the teacher or the supervisor for their own actions.

I play this game with someone every appraisal period, when you talk to them about something that could have gone better, they come back at you like it is your fault.

Managing isn't to much different than teaching, just the student is older and sometimes more cynical.

3. Humans love to learn. As long as the education system doesn't get in the way
of learning (inadequate tools including teachers and facilities, bureaucracy, agenda to discourage learning with crap like intelligent design), nearly all children will learn. That's how we're made.
