3. Has it been called off?
If not, go.

You're going as a chaperon, so go prepared.

Bring every emergency materials/supplies/tools you can think of.

The kids might need you.

5. Chaperoning a dance with kids?
Edited on Fri May-15-09 05:49 PM by Critters2
So, there will be kids gathered in one large space in that weather? Yeah, I'd go. I'd be concerned about them, and would feel they need adults with them. I've been through weather like that, and it wouldn't keep me home.

Sorry, but that's how I'd feel. Make the best decision for you, though.

On edit: A tornado warning typically lasts 15 minutes or less, and is a part of a longer tornado watch. I wouldn't travel while under the warning, but the minute it's lifted, I'd go.

But, again, that's me.

10. +1
If they are going ahead with the dance, someone has to protect the kids' safety. May as well be you.

11. I am scheduled to work the 2nd half at 7 pm
it is 5:30 right now

No way am I driving in a tornado warning into possible golf ball sized hail in my vehicle when there are already 30 teachers there

chances are the dance is being held kneeling in the hallway as we type

there is a tornado siren right in the school grounds

17. Again, don't leave while under a tornado warning, which rarely lasts more than 15 minutes.
But once the warning passes, you should be safe to go. Kids need support in situations like these.

7. Tornado warning and sirens sounding?
I would think that the dance would be called off until tomorrow if possible.

Will there be a need to go? I would think that parents wouldn't want young'us out in that weather. Sorry, I'm no help at all. Stay safe.

8. No - you need to take care of yourself and hopefully the people
going to the dance will do the same. Tornado warnings are there for a reason, so take cover.

9. That looks pretty gnarly.
If you are under a tornado warning it's expected that people should take shelter. It wouldn't be sensible to go out in something like that, and it seems likely that they'd postpone or cancel the event anyhow.

or at least postponed. You're not the only one who will be going out in that mess.

25. If it's a school dance...
Is it a school dance? If it's a solid building with an extensive basement area, it may be one of the safer structures in town, and not a bad place for a bunch of people to evacuate to. My old high school was built like a damned Norman castle, and the basement classrooms seemed like they could withstand a nuclear bomb.

Just a thought...

It really looks nasty in your area. I would definitely not go anywhere but the basement. Better to err on the side of caution.

29. Around here, in West Texas
Sturdy public facilities like schools are where the weather folk tell us to go when storms are approaching.

Then again, once the sirens go off, they tell us to stay where we are.

I wish you safety whatever you decide.
