Last night I watched a great documentary about
Lewis Hine..
For those who do not know of him, he was a wonderful photographer who was largely responsible for ending (trying to) child labor. He also went up with the ironworkers who built the Empire State Building, and documented the amazing feat of engineering (at that time).
He was a card-carrying member of the progressive movement, and had high hopes that it would continue, and make permanent changes, but when WWI came along nationalism, hyper-patriotism and all the kneejerk reactions that go hand in hand with those things, happened, and the progressives were labeled subversive, and anyone who remembers the Palmer raids, know what happened next.
The depression brought out the progressive movement again when they tried to help the dust bowl farmers, the unemployed, the destitute, and yet another war came along, and once again, the progressive movement was shoved aside..
It took until the 60's for progressives to start up again with civil rights, women's rights, and oddly enough there was another war, but this time theprogressives were stronger, and refused to be cowed by the government, but having said that, the progressives were again thwarted by media & heavyhanded government, and a series of deep recessions. The progressives actually "won" their battles of the 60's, but ended up losing their "war" on unfairness. This time around was a bit different, because the VietNam was was seen as unnecessary, so it did not instill the hyper-patriotism, but the reaction to the protesters of it, was as harsh as ever.
Right wing types have always been against progressives, because at the heart of progressive movements, is the belief that people should share..all people..with all people..and that no ONE class should dominate or subjugate any other class.. See the "problem" here?
When progressive movements catch on, the only was to stop them in their tracks, is to unify everyone else..against them.. they have to be made out to be subversive, dangerous, anti-american..and in need of dismantling.
Wars are usually the easiest way to achieve this.
