Bodybuilders flee drug testers; event canceled
The Belgian bodybuilding championship has been canceled after doping officials showed up and all the competitors fled.

A doping official says bodybuilders just grabbed their gear and ran off when he came into the room.

"I have never seen anything like it and hope never to see anything like it again," doping official Hans Cooman said Monday.

Twenty bodybuilders were entered in the weekend competition.

Cooman says the sport has a history of doping "and this incident didn't do its reputation any good."

During testing of bodybuilding events last year, doping authorities of northern Belgium's Flanders region found that three-quarters of the competitors tested positive.

1. History of doping? Nonsense. Anyone with a home gym can look like this drug free.

5. That is reflective of a mental illness
I wish there would be a movement to go back to the Charles Atlas days, when there was so much less drug activity (if any).

9. I think that's Markus Ruhl, and in way way off contest condition.
Off season, he's around 340 (shown). His competition weight is around 280, I believe.

But yeah, he uses...a lot.

This is closer to an accurate depiction:

30. That's synthol, it's a drug injected directly into the muscle, kinda like an implant.

32. Valentino has always contended he's never used Synthol.
I tend to want to believe him considering doctors butchered one of his biceps. Synthol just would have filled it back in.

I dunno though. Tough to take as reality.

2. Wait...had this never been a drug tested event?
That's pretty funny. There's a reason that there are two types of bodybuilding competitions (open and tested/natural), and one can see from the difference in size of the competitors why that's the case.

14. That's pretty funny.
I found this site who claims to be a natural bodybuilder (in Belgium, I think). He says even NATURAL bodybuilders use drugs. Here's what he says:

In no other sport drug use is as common as in bodybuilding, that even separate natural competitions are organized next to the normal competition. However, this doesn't mean at all that athletes participating in these natural bodybuilding contests are really drug free. On the contrary, drug use is at least as common in natural bodybuilding as in any other sport, especially in the high level contests.

The reason why natural bodybuilders use drugs is very simple: the drugs are extremely effective, it is very easy to pass the doping tests, and the rewards of being a champion are very seducing.

None of the natural bodybuilding federations have the money to organize serious drug testing. In the best case, a few athletes are urine tested on the day of a big contest. A single urine test costs several hundreds of dollars, and a more advanced blood test cost a multiple of this. Only a few tests cost already more than the total prize money in a natural bodybuilding contest.

I think we should encourage drug use among them. I wanna see somebody so roided-up he can pull a fire truck with his teeth!

But it was a boxcar not a fire truck.

The guy was a boxer trying to strengthen his jaw IIRC, not a body builder.

Humans generally cannot pack that much muscle on without a little extra help.
