About two-thirds of Omaha residents would support some sort of legal recognition of gay couples' relationships.
But most voters still oppose same-sex marriage.
Those are the results of The World-Herald Poll, which was conducted last month.
When asked how they felt about legally recognizing gay couples, Omaha voters were split into three roughly equal camps. About one-third supported same-sex marriage, one-third favored civil unions only, and about one third opposed both civil unions and marriages for gay couples.
"If only a third of the population is dead set opposed to some sort of legal blessing to gay unions, I find that kind of significant," said Kevin Smith, political science professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. "It's one thing to find that in Massachusetts; it's another thing to find that in Omaha."
The World-Herald Poll was conducted by telephone April 28-30 by Wiese Research Associates. It had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.
