Think Progress: Liberty University shuts down Democratic Party club.
http://thinkprogress.org/2009/05/22/liberty-democrats/

||||Today 3:33 PM|Victor ZapantaLiberty University has announced that it will no longer recognize its student-run Democratic club. The university, founded by televangelist Rev. Jerry Falwell, states that officials “are unable to lend support to a club whose parent organization stands against the moral principles held by” the university. Liberty’s College Democrats have been barred from using the university’s name, holding campus meetings, or advertising events. Liberty’s Vice President of Student Affairs claims “we are in no way attempting to stifle free speech.” Liberty’s College Democrats were recognized with the “Virginia Area Young Democrats Up-and-Coming Chapter of the Year” award in April. Following President Obama’s election last year, Liberty Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. told students:

“My father always said you can disagree without being disagreeable, and that’s the message we’re trying to teach these kids <...> We’re all part of the same LU community.”

Brian Diaz, President of Liberty’s College Democrats, notes that the Liberty College Republicans continue to operate on campus. Just last month, Liberty College Republicans’ Melinda Zosh told The Liberty Champion that it is important to have a College Republicans and a College Democrats on any university campus.

1. Can't believe that Falwell's organization still has a tax exemption, or that it can call itself a
"university".

What sort of young Democrat would go to Liberty Baptist College, anyway?

3. I know a few who did
Oberlin has a (fairly small) College Republicans chapter, too.

Liberty's got a fairly good law school (higher bar pass rates than Mason or UVA) and generous financial aid. Not everybody can pick up stakes and go to just any college they please.
