Nothing spectacular is likely to happen anyway. The 2012 obsession is largely misunderstood. It is nothing more than an astronomical event. Mayan calenders are cyclical, and we will be entering a new 25,000 year cycle. In fact we have been going through the new cycle for about 30 years.

really. :hi:
Unfortunately, the word is code and catchall for anything and everything that a subset -- vocal and vicious -- uses to harm others.
"What they think" matters when they think that others have no right to exist.
The catchall includes all sorts of things that would surprise people (not about spirituality). There's an agenda there, to deny access to information that many folks are interested in.

8. It's the Friday before Christmas that year, so... |
|
...(assuming my job hasn't been offshored yet or some other drastic change in circumstances) I'll probably take the day off and make the holiday a long weekend, and finish up the holiday shopping.
And proably have some drinks with friends to celebrate "the end of the world", same as we did for the "harmonic convergence", assorted end-timer Judgement Day predictions, and assorted fictional dates of significance ("Judgement Day" from the Terminator movies, the day the Moon was blasted out of orbit in the old Space:1999 TV series, etc.).
And then I'll get up on Saturday the 22nd and the world and all its joys and problems will still be here. Plus maybe a hangover.

You know that some Mayan scholars insist the calendar will run out in 2011, not 2012. Either way, it doesn't mean the end of the world, but rather the end of the calendar. If you interpret the calendar to mean a way of showing the evolution of consciousness, then perhaps by that time we will be in a conscious state that makes the world as we know it irrelevant. But whatever happens, I feel that I will be where I am supposed to be.

This is about the end of the world right? I can't remember how many times the world was supposed to end in my lifetime, or how many times California was supposed to fall into the sea. Well I'm still waiting and no doubt will be on 12-22-12 as well.
But lets look at the numbers, shall we? 12 is the date of my birth, 12 is also divisible by 3 and 2, which, when multiplied, is the month of my birth. The product of the the factors of 12 and 21 (which themselves are the same numbers reversed!!) plus the numbers 12 21 and 12 equals the year of my birth. OHSHITOHFUCKNOITSTEHENDOFTEHWORLD!!!!!!!
A few years ago, I'll never forget this, there were some people here at work panicked because the date 6-6-6 was rolling around. Panic!!!!!The devil!!!!11!!!one!!!!OMFG ITS 6-6-6!! Well I haven't seen the devil yet either. It's a disappointment to me, sure, but I'm content to keep waiting.

a budding scholar of Mexico's indigenous peoples. I'm getting my PhD in Latin American history. I'm a year out from completion and will be spending significant time in the Yucatan this summer.
I can assure you, nothing will happen. The Mayan worldview, like most of Mexico's indigenous peoples, believe in cyclical time. All things come to an end. What does this mean? A new world will start with the click of the next katun. It is not necessarily a bad thing; and besides, the Mayas (and Aztecs) believe that several worlds existed before this one. The Long Count coming to an end doesn't mean all life will cease to exist.
To be fair, the Mayan people could not predict their own massive collapse at the end of the Classic Period.
*My advisor is a Mayan historian with many contacts in the Yucatan. He assures me nothing weird will happen.

46. Hmmm. I think I'll start the day with a little fishing, provided my lake hasn't frozen over yet. |
|
Then come home and make breakfast, prolly fried potatoes, eggs, and bacon. Maybe some Bisquick biscuits.
After that I'll navigate to DU to see what the doomsday folks are saying about how many more minutes there are before the world ends.
Once that gets boring, I might play a little Scrabble with my honey or watch a movie, while debating whether to have steaks, chicken, or fish (trout that we caught over the summer) for dinner, and what we might cook to accompany the entree. My guess is that it'll either be steamed brown rice with some kind of sauce, or steamed veggies.
Later we'll probably go to our favorite dive bar: Chad's, take in some live music, and tip the bartender real well.
Then I'll probably go to sleep.
Thanks for asking. I hadn't actually made a schedule for that day, but now I have a rough idea of what to prepare for.
