Ha'aretz reports Pelosi was enlisted by Israel to deliver "message of calm" to Syria.
Edited on Wed Apr-04-07 12:30 PM by BurtWorm
I was tipped to the Haaretz story by Belgravia Dispatch, which is very much worth reading on the difference between Bush and Pelosi as world leaders:

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/844730.html

Israel's political and military leadership has been preparing in recent weeks for the possibility of a Syrian attack on the Golan Heights that will start as a result of a "miscalculation" on the part of the Syrians, who may assume that Israel intends to attack them.

Israel, however, has delivered a calming message, and has no plans to attack its northern neighbor.

According to information Israel received, the Syrians are concerned that the United States will carry out an attack against Iran's nuclear installations in the summer, and in parallel Israel would strike Syria and Lebanon.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who visited IDF forces in the North last week, heard an intelligence assessment and was informed of the dangers of a Syrian "miscalculation."

Following his visit to the forces in the field, a decision was made to publicly address the concerns of a possible deterioration with the Syrians, and to send a message that Israel has no intention of attacking Syria, nor is there any coordinated plan with the U.S. for a joint attack against Iran.

The speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, is scheduled to meet with Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus today, and will deliver a message of calm from Israel.

"We hope the message will be understood," political sources in Israel said yesterday. "The question is whether Assad is looking for an excuse ... so that he can carry out an attack against Israel in the summer, or whether this is a mistaken assessment."

14. wow. First the Saudi King, now this.
NO PERSON IN THEIR RIGHT MIND CAN TRUST THEM. That is the strongest indication of a global recognition of their true character. (sorry for shouting, but these cretins piss me off).

QUestion: Will our MSM ignore this, or will we in the blogs have to push this news back into their frame of reporting? Oh wait, another anna nicole story! And American idle. Never mind.

My furnished dog house. Refrigerator full of beer, rocking chair, CD player and radio and all my toys to dick around with. Its where I spend Saturday Mornings listening to Click and Clack on Car Talk. I don't shout at those guys, I'm usually laughing too hard.

2. Question
Why did the Israeli PM ask the ranking officer of the legislative branch of the US government to deliver a message to Syria?

I can think of some answers to that question, but none of them are complimentary to the Bush regime.

The worst answer would be that he couldn't trust the Bushies to deliver the message. Does he believe that the Bushies want more war in the Middle East and will play Israel like a pawn to get it?

The second is that he thinks a representative of the executive branch would have no credibility, therefore at worst he had nothing to lose by asking the Speaker of the House.

The third is that Bush has no credility with any one and that this is the beginning of an international effort to work around the Bush regime.

Any comments?

10. I'm guessing that Israel, like Saudi Arabia, read the midterms the same way
everyone else in the world did, as the sign of a seismic shift in US foreign policy.

next in line for the presidency.

6. Well lets just hope the military gets that signal
I'm not so sure Bushie wouldn't try to create an incident with his little private blackwater army. Let's not forget that little wild card.

Speaker Pelosi used it last week. This is a diplomatic way of saying they want someone sane to deal with.

16. they must have been setting this up for a while.
a foreign trip, long in planning, a statement by the Saudi king, a visit to Israel, THEN on to Syria. Things like this don't happen overnight.

I wonder what other surprises Pelosi has for us. I just hope her plane doesn't malfunction on the way home.

13. Says to me that Sane Heads know Bush's Plans to Attack Iran and are Heading Him Off
at the "Pass" in good old Wild West Fashion from the movies that Bushie loves to watch and act out.

The White Hats are on the way and they are going to make sure that the Rustlers don't get away with their plans. At least that's what it sounds like. The Iranian Hostages being freed today and the reaction of the Corporate Whore Media who were furious...would seem to say that Bushie/NeoCon plans are being changed. Let's hope this new policy works. We still have almost two years of danger points with the lunatics who could bomb Iran...but hopefully we can hogtie some of the big players.

then Syria was going to attack the Golan and Hamas was going to attack Lebanon

and we were going to have our hands filled with Iran while Iran attacked Saudia Arabia

I think Amajihad knows who his enemy is
