Interesting comment by Wichita Police Chief - watch out, FR!
Sunday's shooting stoked emotional debate on the Internet between supporters of abortion rights and abortion opponents.

Without elaborating, Stolz said investigators will look into the Internet comments because the discussion could bear on public safety.

Yes, FR threatens the public safety often. Maybe they should be toning down their celebrations tonight ---

The only way to find out what his Freeper name was will be through the Wayback machine.

5. Here we go -
Edited on Sun May-31-09 10:11 PM by Tangerine LaBamba
another gorgeous test of our dedication to the Constitution.

Free speech, and how it is defined, just might be discussed in the coming days. That will be a good thing.

Did you see that the Operation Rescue statement referred to "Mr. Tiller"? Fuckers are petty beyond belief. They really need to be heavily sprayed with DDT. And, yes, I know it's illegal.

But, this is chilling. A statement from a living hero who now probably has to live the rest of his life with round-the-clock security:

Warren Hern, a Colorado physician and close friend of Tiller's -- who described himself now as "the only doctor in the world" who performs very late-term abortions -- said Tiller's death was predictable.

"I think it's the inevitable consequence of more than 35 years of constant anti-abortion terrorism, harassment and violence," he said.

When Obama was elected last fall, Hern predicted that anti-abortion violence would increase, he said. Because Obama supports legalized abortion, Hern said, its foes "have lost ground.... They want the doctors dead, and they invite people to assassinate us. No wonder that this happens.

"I am next on the list."

I was just thinking the same thing and was getting ready to write something about the threat to our first amendment rights in all of this. You beat me to it.

25. It could be - and I know it might sound twisted -
an incredibly productive and enlightening time in our history. A true testing of our commitment to free speech.

One door closes, another opens.

Remember that old Chinese curse?

35. What will be in jeopardy is not the 1st Amendment, but the choice of words used by
potential murderers/assassins. One should be allowed to write anything on one's mind on the internets, I'm sure law enforcers would agree, because writings provide a valuable window into a killer's mind.

Would I celebrate if I heard that someone had murdered Randall Terry?

Dick Cheney?

David Addington?

John Yoo?

Jay Bybee?

I better stop. I know the answer ........................

If someone murdered Dick Cheney, would you really celebrate and consider the killer some kind of hero? Would you hope for more killings of conservative leaders?

No, I don't think you would. At least I hope not.

29. I once got a phone call telling me
that a member of my family, one I loved very much but who was seriously unbalanced and had done a great deal of damage to people who loved him, had died.

My first comment, to my cousin, was, "At least he won't hurt anyone else ever again."

That was the extent of my celebrating.

So, no, of course I wouldn't celebrate their murders.

I would, though, be comforted by the notion that they could not do any more harm ..................

The cops have ALWAYS been able to investigate them.

The celebrating on FR is worth monitoring, in the event anyone drops hints of a copycat action. Public safety - just as the Police Chief said.

19. Then I assume you would also believe
Edited on Sun May-31-09 10:48 PM by Truth2Tell
that DU is worth "monitoring" at certain times, as the inappropriate celebrating of crimes has sadly been commonplace here as well.

I think we need to be very very careful what we ask for regarding government "monitoring" of speech on the Web. Responding to to reports of specific threats of violent action is one thing, but the use of generalized monitoring has historically been abused by those in power.

I'm pretty sure that despite their extremely vile views, the mods at FR would actually self report any direct threats of violence or statements of illegal intent. It's not in their self interest to allow them. I believe that Skinner and the folks here would likely do the same. There is a very fine line between prior restraint by government intimidation and legitimate responses to incitement, threats or declarations of intent. And it's a line that American law enforcement has sadly never understood.

I believe we should be extremely careful what we wish for.

edit for clarity

20. There is a history of the FBI investigating freepers
Edited on Sun May-31-09 10:52 PM by proud2BlibKansan
But I have never heard of the FBI looking into anything on DU. Not saying it has never happened, just that I know for sure it has happened to FR.

One thing I find interesting since Obama was elected is that in spite of the hate the left had for Bush and Cheney, I am not aware of any death threats or assassination attempts against them. Are you? But we have been inundated with death threats from wingnuts in the last 6 months. And murder. They are the violent ones, not us.

23. Do I care if DU is monitored? No.
You can't stop any federal authority from reading a site. And I don't believe that 'celebrating of crimes' is at all commonplace here in any event.

Ask anyone in Kansas tonight if they're glad that the Wichita police are going to be monitoring RW hate sites in the coming days. There are plenty of freaks like this out here and once he's made into a hero the threat of copycat killings is greatly increased.

24. In googling earlier, I ran across the goddam Nazis at Stormfront
... calling Roeder "our hero."

I don't know if there's any direct connection -- but given that Roeder was allegedly involved at the time of his arrest in the 90's with the Freemen, who had definite white supremacist affiliations, there certainly could be.

Just one more thing that needs to be looked into -- but hopefully by someone whose stomach for it is stronger than mine.
