Any other DUers had a threat - even one that didn't seem serious.
I guess fear and intimidation are their only weapons.
I have had three. They never seemed like serious threats but when you hear words like "We know where you live" or "People like you shouldn't be allowed to live" it does make a person stop and think for a minute.
I am curious if other DUers have had serious or even 'off handed' threats. How did you respond?

One funny story - a guy who called me on the phone with a threat actually ended up giving me his address. He got a visit from the police shortly there after.

1. A few, via email
And a few in public posts. All in relation to my pro-choice postings in various areas of the 'Net.

I have a concealed carry permit and zero issues with shooting an attacker. And I said so publicly. Once that news was posted, the threats stopped.

2. back when I was a publicly visible enviro activist, actually had some death threats on my answering
...machine, verbal intimidations, etc.

Some of the rightwingers would go to the same public hearings we were at, and follow people to their cars, and copy down license plate #'s, then publish them in their rightwing newsletters (this was right before the internet took off, so activism was still phone tree/xerox based...!)

Most of my mainstream liberal friends were blissfully unaware how vicious these rightwingers were, and what kind of craziness was gathering, storm cloud wise, on the fringes of the "sensible" American politics they imagined still defined this country...

8. Once for an LTTE on Bushie
once after the 2004 election (from some asshole who wanted to rub my face in it. He later apologized for W) and once from a county Republican as he ran away from me after a local parade. I could not get a good look at him but he was running away from me full speed screaming that I ought to be killed. I had a camera but couldn't get a picture.

After yesterday these threats kind of rolled back through my mind.

4. All I get are honks and angry looks from people due to my Obama stickers on my car.
I've never had anyone threaten me about anything.

Do you live in an area that breeds this type of behavior, or are you threatened due to political activism?

Whatever it is, please be careful out there. These people are not playing with a full deck, and they quite obviously are armed and dangerous.

21. You reminded me
of a time during a protest about clear cutting when some idiots tried to run me off the road on my commute to work. Since the road is on the ridge and drops on either sides were hefty, it was no laughing matter. Got them, though. On the way home, a friend driving a van with the state seal on it followed me home. Saw the idiots ready to go after me again--until they saw the seal on the van. Didn't realize it was a van for transportation, I guess. Either way, that night some drunks came to our house and threatened us with a gun--my husband and the more sober one talked the one fellow out of doing anything.

5. I have received death threats overseas

When I told the caller I would be happy to meet with them in person to hear their point of view they realized that they could not then tell me who they were because they have just broken the law, but it certainly reduced the confrontational nature of the conversation and may have changed their mind on their stated course of action.

In the US I would be much more cautious because so many people have access to lethal weapons.

in his country." I got the meaning, alright.

7. I had a guy call me a "queer lover" once
Edited on Mon Jun-01-09 01:46 PM by Bluzmann57
Because of a ltte I wrote to the QC Times in support of gay rights. The simpleton apparently looked up my number in the book, decided to call me and proceeded to call me a "queer lover" who probably "took it up the ass". Ah, but I have caller ID and he has small mental capacity. So I simply called his house the very next day from a pay phone and explained to him that I was coming for him and bringing my "queer buddies" with me. I've never heard from him since.
I would not reccommend doing what I did though. There are an awful lot of loony tunes out there and now they may feel trapped and backed into a corner with nothing to lose. Bedides, he had my street address, so it would have been fairly easy to come over here and do damage. It's just that I decided a long time ago that I will not take any more crap from these people and I am dumb enough to fight fire with fire.

19. They are all cowardly bullies who, when confronted, will run away. Nothing is ever gained by
backing down.

Confront them at every turn. Make them know that they will personally suffer for any actions or threats.

They will go away. And if they do not, you get to teach them about consequences.

The guy who made the threat ended up being arrested for a robbery before he could make good on it.

18. Personally, I consider them nastier than Al Queda
but then again, I've had personal experiences with members of the Phineas Priesthood.

Al Queda, not so much.

12. I had a freeper with his car covered with right-wing stickers try to run me and my wife off the road
Edited on Mon Jun-01-09 01:53 PM by onehandle
This was in 2000. He had a Bush sticker, pro-gun and nra stickers, Ayn Rand slogans etc.

I slowed down and he almost ran into another car. Sadly, I missed his license plate.

I had a Gore sticker and a "Friends don't let Friends Vote Republican" sticker on my car. He must have had twenty stickers.

26. Thanks.
Been doing it for 15 years. Aside from the verbal crap, just an occasional kick or jab in the back. The police handle it pretty well.
There are bullet-proof vests but no escort I know has ever worn one.
When my mom was alive, she used to be worried when I escorted.

Pages and pages of religious rambling with bible quotes about respecting the chosen leader and the sword and all kinds of nutty stuff. I called the police so they'd know the nutball was out there.

20. My husband has
He was threatened by a gun by a drunk guy who came to our house during a time when a group of us was trying to stop clear cutting. His buddy talked the guy out of doing anything. Another time a fellow threatened to kill all Muslims--until my husband told him of his faith, and shut him up. I was threatened with the loss of my job (and therefore didn't mention my faith--and the boss never asked why I always wore a hat).

22. Yes, but not DU/politically related.
I blew it off and ridiculed the sender, because I knew it came from a contingent of people who were 25-going-on-12, loud in print but cowards IRL. If they ever had shown up at my door, they'd have been in for a nasty surprise.

28. Yup, got stalked at a Dem mtg a few times & had another guy follow me home & confront me once.
The mtg stalker freaked me out, he just sat and watched the mtgs then wrote me nasty things via e-mail afterward.
I eventually moved, so problem solved itself.

When the other guy followed me home & confronted me on the driveway, fear adrenaline kinda took over.
When he started threatening me I tore into him, not letting up, getting angrier & angrier (& louder & louder).
I think that took him back a bit.
I told him if he ever showed up at my residence again I would exercise my TX right to self-defense (you can guess the rest)...
