How many D.U.ers would walk out
of their local business's if they had FOX news on their t.v.s?
I liked when Keith Olberman asked people to walk out if this was the case.

We have several pizza shops and local diners that I stopped going to because they had Fox news on.

The one diner I asked as it on more than one T.V. do I really have to watch this? and the waitress was nice enough to change it...............if not I'm outta there.

Four big TVs blasting Fox News in the middle of Grand Central. Who owns Hudson News?

FOX is on at nearly every establishment here in Boehner country.

When I do, I always tell the management I don't appreciate them showing Right-Wing propaganda. They usually change it - even though I don't think any of them realize how offensive FOX is.

I think customers do it.

6. Get one of these instead..
http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/755e/

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are about 250 million television sets in the U.S. and we can guess that the majority of them are turned on a lot of the time. All in all, this is not bad (heck, we enjoy a good movie as much as anyone else) but there are some occasions when you just need to do everyone a favor and turn the TV off. A certain portion of television content is just plain questionable and about as healthy as second-hand smoke.

Enter the TV-B-Gone, a small television remote that hangs on your keychain and turns off virtually any television with the press of button. "Now, what would be the purpose of such a device?" you may be asking yourself. Well, without revealing too much of our devious nature we can think of a few things. Imagine sports bars or annoying talking head shows that appear on monitors at the airport. Add to that your own creativity and we're pretty sure you'll come up with some ideas. All you need to do is press the button and keep pointing it at the TV until it turns off (which may take up to 69 seconds). The next 69 seconds will be spent quietly, or not so quietly, enjoying the perplexed expressions of the TV automatons.

And no, she didn't.

What is stupid is to equate the valid criticism of one candidate who happens to be a female with sexism against all females, and to say one commentator who is passionate about conveying the truth is the same as all the lying propagandists who try to destroy the truth simply because they're both able to speak English well.

If you don't want to watch Keith, fine. But don't dismiss him because of misconceptions you created from the primaries over a year ago. Hillary has been able to get over it, why can't you?

If you have an accusation, make it. There are plenty of haters out there for you to come up with specific examples other than vague hearsay. (If you can't come up with anything on your own, I'm sure someone like Perry Logan will help.)

Otherwise, you should realize that EVERY liberal media advocate - in print, on radio or on TV - has been and WILL BE targeted by RW lies. There are few enough liberal advocates in the media to allow us to lose them.

Which is exactly behavior PUMAs engaged in. All of that unreasoning, seething hatred against the Inadequate Black Male and people who backed the winning candidate stems only from the fact they backed the winning candidate instead of Hillary & has nothing to do with what Obama & Keith & Randi & everyone else have actually said or done.

147. perhaps examples abound
a viewer might not readily be able to cite them though. Perhaps she just watched the show and heard something and said "what a sexist thing to say" but didn't bother to write down the date and time and the exact quote. Perhaps more watching brought more examples that were similarly not recorded, or one egregrious example that convinced her, although she didn't bother to carry it around to try and prove it to his fans.

Somerby has mentioned a few examples, and seems to agree with Haruka.

http://www.dailyhowler.com/dh051309.shtml

"Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! But yes: That’s why progressive cable has focused on the insignificant person, Prejean, rather than on someone more important. MSNBC has focused on Prejean so Wolff can run endless swimsuit tape, thereby letting Olbermann muse about those breast implants.

Why did Olbermann mention those breast implants twice? Rubes! Because that was the actual topic!

That, and the fact that Olbermann has a remarkable, long-time jones about trashing young women."

...

"WTF means “what the f*ck.” Years ago, that was our own reaction when we watched Olbermann, night after night, ridiculing a string of young women. Young male athletes were doing lots of weird things at the time. Funny—they never got mentioned."

Feel free to search his incomparable archives for more examples.

81. R U on favorable turf here CB?
As a registered independent voter, I'm an equal opportunity critic who'll not be a party to either party, having said that CB, I think you need some time in a happy chair!
The evolution of mass media has undergone a lot of steps to become the said and sorry thing it is today, but I'll get back to that in a minute.
There is a powerful machine at work Eisenhower referred to as the "military industrial" complex and it has grown a couple of limbs since he warned us not to go there, but in terms of places there's less and less of them to be.
The power brokers that run the cogs our country operates on began pandering to the left wing mind set in the months leading up to last years elections. They saw the writing on the wall and knew it was time to bail on the right wing so they'd appear to be one of the good guys when the dust settled. They don't really care which party's in charge as long as they are observed in a favorable light, it will take some time, but I believe that ultimately, unless journalists reclaim the neutral ground, that the media will return to its now familiar role as mouthpiece for the monetarily mighty.
Now, back to the degradation of how we get our info. When tabloid tv emerged in the early to mid 80's, I believe it threw the newsies back some. So they adjusted. Though they should have known better than to think there was any room for editorializing while delivering the news, they had to compete with their compelling info-tainment cousins for market share. Since then, the mass media has morphed into the land of talking heads is fraught with fervor and an obvious desire to shape opinion rather than simply inform as is their original calling.
Given the advent of technology, information sources are now wide spread and the truth has become a matter of where you like to find it. News may return to objectivity and reason, but hecklers like you are going to hinder the process.
As for Mr. Olbermann, in my humble opinion, he's come into this industry at one of its darkest days, and engaged in a way that is humorous, informative and thought provoking. One of the few TV hosts that doesn't leave me yelling about the questions that didn't get asked. So don't blame him, he didn't set the stage.

129. Tabloid TV didn't simply "emerge in the 80's", it was created by the elimination of the Fairness
Doctrine, under Reagan. It literally couldn't have operated with the old rules since they would have had to give equal time to opponents of their rants.

Once they sold out and the corporate parasites took it over the quality of a real Krispy Kreme was the first thing sacrificed.

What you're eating is HFCS and sugar bonded in a bit of flour and deep fried in vegetable oil, and the only resemblance to a Krispy Kreme doughnut is the shape and the box.

10. I live in the middle of conservative dumfuckistan, Arizona.
and EVERY business that has a TV on, is tuned to Faux.

I try not to go to any business that has any TVs on, but there is only one Pizza place in town, and, unless there is a Diamondback or Cardinal game, the TeeVee is blasting inSanity and O'Liely everywhere. Can't be avoided and they won't change the channel. So... I try not to eat pizza much and use take out whenever possible.

But I'm probably one of the few people this side of Attila the Hun here.

I believe that it is driving me insane. I just have to get out of here.

its a little better here :) - not much but a little. There's at least one left leaning bar that I know of (Time Out Lounge at Broadway and Southern) and an organization called "Drinking Liberally" (like-minded liberals getting together for happy hour) used to meet weekly at El Penasco at Broadway and Mill (don't know if they still do).

Just stay away from Mesa if you value your sanity!

I was out at a local eatery with my brother, my sister and her kids, and after ordering I noticed Faux was on. I ignored it for the most part, aside from a few harmless EEKs whenever they flashed Hannity's face on screen. No reason to ruin the kids' fun.

If I'm by myself, there's no reason to ruin my fun either.

13. I have the remarkable ability of not watching......
....or listening! I think business owners should be able to watch whatever they want as long as it is not blaring. I don't judge a business by what's on a TV. Chances are it's an employee that has it on the channel, anyway. And, I never, ever watch FOX.

If I bitched about what's on the TV at someone's business, I would be just like a lot of them, judging a person by their political beliefs, which I have found is wrong. When you live in a republican haven as I do, you learn to concentrate on what is important and not what is on the TV or an individuals political beliefs. That business owner may be providing a good job for a number of democrats, who in turn would be hurt by your denial of business. It's your choice, of course, but I will never be that shallow. I do not march to any particular drummer.

15. I don't base my food decisions on what the people have on the tube
First of all, I generally go to places that don't have TV's anyway. You're there for the food and the atmosphere, not the goddamn boob tube. Secondly, having Faux on the tube is, in many case, a decently smart business decision, and I can't fault the owners for having it on. Finally, I don't base my food choices, or my entertainment choices for that matter, on the person's politics, I base them on how good their product, be it food or entertainment, is.

96. There was this teriyaki place here locally back in the 1990's
It was starting to get a lot of business because they gave you a better deal for the price than their competitor and the food actually tasted better (No MSG or whatever)

The owners put up a huge billboard sized "Linda Smith" sign in their parking lot. Linda Smith was the local Freeper congress woman elected in the 1994 congressional purge and pretty much universally despised in the Liberal end of the district.

I never ate there again. Neither did anybody else I know. And it killed their business, which is a damn shame because the food really was good. Come to think of it, I don't think any business was ever successful at that location again. It's an empty lot now. For all the conservatives like to talk about the "free market" it doesn't work well for them when they're honest about themselves.

at the doctor's office (yep, their telly was set on Faux Snooze) that their choice of programming was offensive in an already too-stressful environment for sick people, and the office clerk changed the channel. Worked like a charm, but I don't advise complaining just anywhere - in some settings, better to leave and take your business elsewhere. If enough customers did, the message would be delivered though perhaps ill-received.

30. Don't be a bunch of pussies - get the channel changed.
This isn't about "I have better things to do" or "I don't choose my food based on politics" or "I'll piss off the owner". Those statements are a chickenshit cop-out. If you CLAIM to be a Progressive, a Democrat, a Liberal, or any of the other things we call ourselves here, get the channel changed.

If you're gonna talk the talk here, then walk the walk in the real world. Anything less puts you in the same boat as Limbaugh, Hannity, and O'Reilly - the USS Chickenshit Chickenhawk. All about TALKING UP the war, the battle, the struggle, the need for change in America, but not about joining the fight for real.

This is about tuning out the hate speech. Getting it out of people's ears. Toning down the outrageous rhetoric being vomited upon our nation. I've read far too many comments here from folks who are trying to explain why they're just too damned good or far too important or way too busy to do this. Be part of the solution or you're simply condoning the problem. You want change - REAL FUCKING CHANGE - in this nation? If so, then summon up the self-respect you need to make a simple damn request.

Or just grow a set and ask that the channel be changed.

I've done it four times in the last 2 months. One guy (a busboy) argued with me about it. I pointed out that that FOXed-Up News is propaganda and that as a paying customer, I couldn't understand how he was in any position to disagree with me. He changed the channel himself - to CNN, but it sure beat listening to the garbage FOX spews. The other three changed the channel without a peep.

If I'm ever refused, I'll leave and I'll tell them why. My money spends EVERYWHERE!!!

I've had them change the TVs in restaurants and, when I go see my doctor next week, I'll make him change it, too.

Without the myth that CNN is liberal, Fox would eventually be recognized for what it actually is.

That was one of my issues with Outfoxed. In an effort perhaps to keep its message clear, it created a sort of "lone nut" or "bad apple" theory of TV news.

Those people are pretty obsessed with that stupid channel. And he lived in the Redneck Riviera (his words not mine) of the Florida Panhandle, so this was pretty commonplace.

79. I ask people in the room if I might change the channel.
I'm always ready to politely discuss the issue with any Fox News zombies who come out of their stupor, but they rarely do. If you've ever dealt with overstuffed classrooms of urban middle school students, Fox News zombies are no problem.

But Fox News isn't a problem where I live anyways. Most shop televisions are tuned to Spanish language stations -- usually soccer matches or soap operas.

Edited on Tue Jun-02-09 10:59 AM by Shell Beau
So, no I wouldn't walk out because I am not even sure I would know what was on the tv. And even if I did, I am sure I wouldn't walk out. I just wouldn't pay any attention.

Edit-I never go eat by myself. I wouldn't ask my whole crew to leave because I have a problem with the tube.

I'd rather watch Fox news than some inane sitcom or the weather channel. My convictions aren't so fragile that they can't withstand an opposing viewpoint.

89. Olbermann is a bright shiny oasis
Olbermann is a bright shiny oasis in the sea of MSM propaganda.

I'm a 55 year old male and I never picked up a sexist vibe from Keith.

I think he's rooted in a quest for good journalism - truth, facts, investigation and questioning the 'conventional wisdom'.

Boycotts are not my thing, but what are we to do when MSM unapologetically spews hate speech even after the assassination of this Doctor, then steps have to be taken.

I guess we're all targets of right wing extremists now!

Don't you all appreciate Keith for having the courage to do his show and special comments during the "Americans better watch what they say" dark era of this country during the market debut of Iraq War 2; "this time we're taking Saddam out"

I don't think there's any common ground about Keith between me and Ms. Coyote, unfortunately.

For the record, for all of DU to see, I am indeed an unabashed Keith fan, for all the right reasons. I also watch Rachel, who's ratings may be falling for some reason, and I also hope to be a Cenk fan if he ever gets a MSM gig!

93. I won't frequent an establishment with *ANY* TV on.
I don't own a TV -- I hate TV programming in general and "news" most of all. FOX is the worst but most all of them are pretty bad. They are all means of controlling our social and cultural perceptions through selectively focusing our attention on what "they" deem important, what part of it "they" want us to know about (ignoring anything they don't want us to know about) and often cast it in a way that leads us to "think" or "feel" a certain way about it. All that not to mention the constant bombardment with corporate/product advertising. TV is hypnotic. It puts people in a trance state. I'm with Howard Beal -- we should just throw the damn things out the window or only use them to watch movies.

Where I live, the business district consists of 3 banks, two car dealerships (if they're still open), a hotel, a Civil War souvenir shop, 3 supermarkets and a few gas stations. They ALLLLL show Faux. If I walk out, I'll starve and definitely have to walk 'cause my car will rot in the driveway:)

I mouth off continually, and currently prefer to laugh or contradict whatever's on the boob tube. I shop elsewhere when I can, but much as I love Keith - he needs to remember some of us live in Dogpatch, USA without his salary. Peace, dudes.:hippie:

110. No
We have a tv in our waiting room and sometimes customers change it to that, there's not a rule here that we must keep it on it. Sometimes it's on ESPN, Food Network, MSNBC, etc. I would assume it's the same in other places, either a customer before me requested it or changed it to it.

For a while they actually did put CNN on the opposing TV in their lobby. Then they put Faux back on and ignored my future emails.

I took my money out of that credit union. I've avoided other businesses due to hate TV being broadcast on their TV's. It's NOT a joke to me, show hate, no business.

left restaurants that had Fox on, and we also stopped going to our dentist who had all the new TVs he'd had installed in the individual procedure rooms tuned to Fox. Seriously, how difficult is that?

I don't refuse to watch actors who don't agree with my politics, and I won't blow off a business I like and consider a good value for the money just because of what's on the TV.

I first voice my disgust in a loud voice to make sure the management knows why I'm doing it - after first politely asking them to change the channel...if they don't - I get up and leave and LOUDLY explain why I'm doing it...

Even had the "management" of my FORMER eye doctor come to try to calm me down - but wouldn't change the channel - they lost my business...

It's amazing how many employees or managers can't seem to find the remote...

I will NOT tolerate LIES and REPUKE PROPAGANDA!!!

I'll take CNN's half truths to constant lies and propaganda anytime...

Yeow -- do you know how many cars they screw up? I'd change my own oil before I'd go there -- and I don't have a clue as to how to even open the hood, never mind change the oil.

I went to the Dr. a few months ago and they had Fox on in the waiting room. When I got in to see him, he mentioned that my blood pressure was a little higher than last time. I told him "Well, it wasn't when I got here, but an hour of listening to that garbage on the TV changed all that. Are you trying to make people sick by having that on?" I explained that studies show that watching news stresses people and raises their blood pressure. (I made that up.) Next time, they had a non-news station on.
