to make sure that their constituents like the ideas. Those constituents being either corporate bigwigs or the religious right, depending on what they are pushing.
If their ideas don't make any real scientific sense it's only because:
1. Corporations think science is a tool that only they should use. It should never be used by anyone else against them. It should only be used to increase their profits, not to demand that they meet any outside standards that would cut into their profits.
2. The religious Right thinks science is often a weapon used against them, and they demand that their politicians remain skeptical of science.

Hell, they thought up the idea that Reagan is the next best thing to Jesus Christ 30 yrs ago and they're still promoting it. Totally unencumbered by facts or thought processes.
