Vt. has highest rate of pot smokers

By Brent Curtis Staff Writer - Published: June 5, 2009

Vermont ranked highest nationwide for marijuana use in a new survey released Thursday by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

The survey, conducted in 2006 and 2007, compares drug use by age and by type across all 50 states.

While Vermont doesn't have the highest level of drug use — that distinction goes to Rhode Island where 12.5 percent of the populace reported illicit drug use in the past month — the Green Mountain State was cited in the report for having the highest incidence rate of marijuana use among people aged 12 and older.

While the national average for marijuana use was 1.6 percent in 2006 and 2007, use of the drug in Vermont was 2.5 percent during the same time frame.

That's nothing new, according to researchers at the SAMHSA, who said Thursday that Vermont has consistently ranked high for marijuana use.

6. And nine degrees cooler than Cleveland on average
I looked into it.

That lakefront rail trail in Burlington was one of the most attractive one I have been on. A glistening causeway made of quarried marble blocks across a lake with views of Mt. Mansfield and the Adirondacks. Oooh baby.

And you can thank Bernie Sanders and Howard Dean for it!

(And while you're there go to the brew pub and try the raspberry beer)

2. More made up stuff
Who's going to tell a surveyor that they break the law?

You'd have to be high to think that only 1.6 percent of the population smokes weed.

4. 1.6% means 1 of 3 pot smokers is busted yearly.
I would be surprised if it was 1 in every 100. I know of no one who would admit to
Illegal activity, but I know dozens of smokers

I don't think so..and...then RI that bastion of crime (leave out the mafia types) ooohhh, but if mj is a gateway drug wouldn't the state with the highest pot smoking population ALSO have the highest drug use incidence? I recon I am just cornfused..:silly:

9. How do you like the cold?
Really, I think that's the bottom line. There really is a good 5 months of winter here. And I wouldn't retire to where I live in Vermont. I love the Kingdom but I wouldn't retire here. Burlington area, some places in Southern VT are probably better bets for people from out of state.

My Mom was born and raised in the NE Kingdom. (near Newport) As far as I know, it's still a pretty hardscrabble area

12. Hardscrabble but changed by us flatlander types
I lived near Newport for a few years. Yeah, it's hardscrabble throughout the Kingdom, but it's leavened by lots of artists, places like Karme Choling, organizations like Catamount Arts, a big organic farming movement, etc.

brought by circumstance and family to the NYC area. I wouldn't mind living where the leaves REALLY turn. I can take the cold.

Just joking. Wish we had a couple of Bernies down here instead of the two we are stuck with due to the strangle hold the repukes have managed to establish. But that's another story.
