So... Is The "Safe" Bet To Go With The First Black, Or Female, VICE-President ??? |
|
I mean... while were talkin about how racist this country is, are we forgetting how sexist it is too???
The very same arguments for racism being a campaign killer for Obama in the General Election, speak to sexism being a campaign killer for Hillary in the General Election.
In days of yore, a woman, or an African-American would be "picked" as second on the national ticket.
So the question seems to be, are we as a nation grown-up enough to put a minority, ANY minority, at the head of a national ticket of EITHER party???
Hearts and minds of racists\sexists are not so easily changed. So you are left to wonder if enough of these idiots have died off without spreading their poison to their children and grandchildren.
And if you are unsure of how many racists and sexists are left in good 'ole Amurica, the temptation is to play it safe and put an established white guy at the head of the ticket.
But ya know... I've had it up to my fucking neck with Democrats playing it safe.
So I say go for it. Let the best man\woman of any race, win.

No black has ever been given, or seriously considered, for the second spot on a ticket. Only one woman was ever nominated for Vice-President, and that was a desperate Hail Mary pass to try and save a doomed campaign. (It didn't work.)
I think we're overdue.

2. Ok... So It Was A Day Of Yore, LOL !!! |
|
But the point still stands. Although I also think we are way overdue, apparently there are many who don't think it can happen... even now... even here.

3. Either party? I don't think so |
|
It's not surprising that the first potential woman president or black president with a serious shot at winning both happen to be Democrats. The GOP are exclusively white, privileged, and male.

4. Dems haven't gotten the majority of the white male vote since '64 |
|
If they can pick up at least 45% either one has it in the bag. It'll help a lot if many feel discouraged and stay home. Demographics are starting to run in our favor.

5. Who cares if it's "playing it safe"? |

The best way to fight racism and sexism in this country is to elect non-racists/sexists (i.e. progressives) to positions of power. If we can do that by putting a white male--especially an eminently QUALIFIED white male like Al Gore--at the top of the ticket and a woman or minority second, then that's what we should do.
The hell with tokenism and symbolic gestures--let's play to WIN!
Gore/Pelosi 2008!
