The true unemployment rate is closer to 16.4%
If you include the U-6 tally, that incorporates those who are too discouraged to look for a job, and those working part time hours because they can't find full time slots, the rate is:

closing in on 17%.

8. Here's the problem: if this was the 1930's, community values trumped individual ones
So neighborhoods would have formed unemployed people's councils and the like.

But we a a fragmented people - so I expect more violence, more acts of antisocial activity, more barbarism.

Aristotle was dead on when he said "...he who is unable to live in society, or who has no need because he is sufficient for himself, must be either a beast or a god: he is no part of a state."

5. Yeah, and probably me too in that category.
I'm sorry you are in that basket too.

There is no question that many, many more people are in distress than are recorded by government figures.

Is that a good way to put it?

7. NOW You've Done It. You've DARED To Post Sobering Reality In GD, Citizen.
Prepare to be assaulted by the Keepers Of The Order Of the Eternal False Paradigm with devastatingly dismissive and pooh-poohing dialogue about How U6 "Doesn't Exist", "Isn't Relevant", is "Just A New-Age, Alternative Way of Measuring The Work Force That Isn't Reliable", "Skewed Data", "Doesn't Make Me Feel Good, So You're A Debbie Downer Pseudo-Republican, Doom-SayerPants Who Wants The Economy To Fail."

10. And then there are those
who are now considered employed because they have the iniative to bring in a few bucks here and there doing odd jobs or consulting.....

And then there are those who gave up looking for work and decided to go back to school and get some new skills to make themselves more competitive in the future.....
