Progressive blogger calls Letterman "the smelly, 62-year-old coot who never arranged to grow up"

Today, in response to David Letterman's recent joke that Sarah Palin attended an event dressed like a "slutty flight attendant," progressive media critic Bob Somerby said:

He’s the smelly, 62-year-old coot who never arranged to grow up.

Boys like Letterman never grow up. Inside their brains, hard wires keep telling them to aim naughty jokes at 14-year-old girls—and to refer to women as “slutty.” The Greenwich guy did it again Monday night. People like this never stop.

Perhaps the most interesting part of this whole syndrome is the way the “liberal” world has accepted it.

In my view, Palin should relax and understand that comedians at time make crude jokes about public figures. On the other hand I think Letterman (who cracks me up more often than not) should be careful not to cross a line that may be viewed as disrespectful towards women.

but he didn't refer to Sarah Palin as being slutty, his joke was that she was dressing in a manner to emulate the "look" of a "slutty flight attendant" (which if my flying experience is any measure, is something that hasn't existed for 30 years. But I digress). It doesn't imply she is slutty any more than it implies she is a flight attendant. Good grief. It's a joke told by a comedian at the expense of a public figure that obviously has used her "looks" to her perceived advantage throughout her political career. Wink wink.

"slutty flight attendant" joke. The joke about A-Roid knocking-up Palin's 14-year-old daughter, however, was a little tasteless and unnecessary.
