The largest private employer in America is now Wal-mart
Edited on Thu Jun-11-09 09:55 PM by TwixVoy
Something to think about.

I fear for our children as a nation. They are going to be essentially slaves to the banks and mega corporations most of their lives. Forced to compromise their ethics and keep quiet about unfair treatment for fear of losing the little bit they have.

What are we going to do about it? Nothing I fear. Democrats in power have not even made a token attempt to stop outsourcing. They killed the free choice act and make no mistake the bankruptcy of GM was nothing more than a move to kill off the last union stronghold in the country which has now been accomplished on Democrats watch. They have given our cash to the banks to insure that the general population can continue to be slaves to them making monthly payments their entire life. Debt is slavery.

I was naive enough to have hope for change. In fact we are the underclasses on board the Titanic. The rich are telling us all is well (Gee look at the stock market rise!) while they jump ship.

The Democrats in power had the chance to turn the tide. I truly don't want to be negative. I WANT to believe it's not too late. Can anyone tell me that?

1. buy American made products whenever you can, patronized independent or worker friendly stores...
...always.

We've sold our souls for pretty tennis shoes and cheap crap bulk Chinese goods.

10. If only it were that simple
They have us by the balls. And they have us brain washed even to the point we think we influence policy by where we BUY THINGS.

Did the founders of this country say "Gee let's get independence by buying from the local general store!". Of course not. It takes actual policy change and a population that is not numb to everything. I wish we could have a great experiment one day. Shut off ALL TV broadcasts and see what people do. Just for one day. I have a feeling it would be incredible.

plenty of folks here at DU, even, still singing the praises of slave-mart.

even those with DC government pensions talking about how their terrible economic situation compells them to shop walmart so they can save ten bucks.

so imagine if you actually work there.

on edit: walmart has been the largest private employer FOR YEARS. Not just "now".

6. Obama could force the unions into Walmart.
Only if he wants to be a great and remembered president. There could be a second great middle class in America if the service industry is unionized and it has to start with Walmart.

at one time in this country a&p grocery chain had a larger market share than walmart. within 30 years a&p lost most of it`s market share and today is a small regional grocer

15. Good of you to change the wording to PRIVATE. However, now you'll have to edit "now."
Wally World has been the largest private employer for some time--since at least 04, and maybe even earlier. It's not like they "just" took the crown, or something. When people were buying houses hand over fist, spending money like drunken sailors, and using their plastic like there was no tomorrow, Wally was still numbah one.

17. Maybe it should read CHINA is the largest private employer . . . ??
.
.
.

It could soon be true -

let's see . . .

GM and Chrysler are courting bankruptcy

I don't hear such talk about Toyota, Nissan, Kia, Honda, Hyundai, Peugeot, Volkswagen, etc.,

Ford seems to be quiet, but I have my suspicions that the "Big Three" are no more . .

And so goes the USAmerican Empire - as all Empires go

Who coulda known?
