NYC will gas 2K geese to protect aircraft (2 thousand!!!)

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/newyork/ny-bc-us--birdstrikes0611jun11,0,1617977.story

New York City plans to trap and gas as many as 2,000 Canada geese over the next few weeks in an attempt to avoid the type of collision that caused an airliner to ditch in the Hudson River last winter.

The hunt will take place on dozens of city properties within five miles of Kennedy and LaGuardia airports.

Aviation officials have culled bird flocks on airport property for years, but this will mark a major expansion of the effort into other parts of the city.

Some 40 public parks will be swept free of geese, including Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens. The roundup, carried out by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is being timed with the molting season, when the geese can't fly. It is scheduled to begin within a week.

1. GOOSE BARBECUE
Boil goose until tender (3-4 hours). Change water every hour. Take meat off the bones.

Prepare Chesapeake Bay Barbecue Sauce:
1/4 cup butter
1 cup catsup
1/2 cup sugar
1 lemon (juiced)
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 small onion (finely chopped)
Salt, pepper, garlic powder, tobasco sauce to taste

Put meat in sauce and heat 30 minutes at 200 degrees.

Do *NOT* skip the boiling step, those fuckers are GREASY!

2. Sorry.. preventing a plane crash like the one in the Hudson is worth it

If "Sully" didn't make that heroic water landing, dozens of humans would be dead.

2000 geese to potentially prevent plane crashes? .... that's worth it to me.

I'm 100% behind this move.

Call me names if you want... 1 human life > 2000 geese lives

Bird-strike act gets governor's signature

Rachael Jackson | Sentinel Staff Writer
5:24 PM EDT, June 11, 2009

Airport birds

A bill that gives airports more leeway to shoo critters off runways got the governor's signature on Thursday.

Called the Airline Safety and Wildlife Protection Act, it was prompted by the emergency river landing of a plane that struck a flock of geese over New York in January. It prevents airports from being penalized if they accidentally harm an animal that's interfering with a flight.

Environmentalists have questioned how authorities will determine whether an animal injury or death was accidental or intentional.

The act was welcomed by the Orlando Sanford International Airport, where chief executive officer Larry Dale said it can be difficult for his employees to manage wildlife.

At that airport, workers often shoot paint balls to frighten away eagles. Dale said workers never aim for the eagles, but shoot around them. The new bill protects the airport from penalties if an eagle were accidentally shot.
####################
I can guaranttee that eagles will now be hit and the people that do it will pretend they did not mean to do it.

9. I know it's awful, but is it an overpopulation issue or is it just migration change?
Edited on Fri Jun-12-09 11:48 AM by woodsprite
Around here (DE), we used to see them near bodies of water (land, hang around awhile, have their young, then take off), but now we're seeing them all over, all year - nesting in high school football fields, retention puddles (they dry up when it's not raining), hospital front lawns, near and far from bodies of water, etc. I don't know anything about the Canada Goose population, whether there is a population boom or a migratory change, but something has changed - global warming?

I was amazed that 4 lanes of traffic during morning rush hour yesterday actually stopped for a momma, 5 large goslings, and a poppa. They were going from the shopping center to the high school field and stopped for awhile in the Prudential parking lot. I hope they weren't crossing the highway to get to water, because there wasn't any the direction they were going. I don't think the goslings were old enough to fly yet because their wings looked pretty small still.

They're even nesting in the runoff ditches on the side of the roads, and one mate was hit the other day on a road near our home.

Edited on Fri Jun-12-09 12:03 PM by FSogol
keeps increasing. They addle the eggs here to keep the population low.

To addle the eggs, you need a state license.
1. chase the mother away with umbrellas and you need a lookout to keep the mom from attacking.
2. Dump the eggs from the nest into a bucket of water and see if they float.
3. If they float, you put the eggs back in the nest and leave
4. In the eggs sink, the fetuses aren't developed. You then
5. coat the egg with vegetable oil which stops the flow of oxygen to the egg causing the egg to never hatch.
6. It takes weeks with 3 volunteers to addle all the eggs around 2 small ponds here.

I've actually thought about training my younger Border Collie for it. I think she'd have the perfect temperment. Lots of herding drive, very intense, but easy going.

Watching Border Collies at work is pretty amazing. They herd by essentially going through all the motions of the hunt, but stopping short of the kill. It's very intimidating.

49. That's pheasant hunting
Pheasants try to avoid you by running through the prairie grasses. You need a lot of hunters working in a line, or a bird dog, to ge them to flush. At least, after the first day of hunting.

Dogs are used for retrieval of the geese that land in the water because they can swim.

Goose hunters usually get them as they fly in for a landing.

Keep in mind that the geese are flying in and out all day during the season.

That's my guess. "OMG! What if it hits a plane?!?!?"

It bounces off, assuming by some freak of circumstance a plane ever actually got close enough to be hit by the pellets. Duh. It's birdshot, not rifle fire. I've actually been hit with birshot fired from maybe 150 yards away. It pitter-pattered against my clothing. Some hunters in my party were shooting at pheasants, and some of the shot arched over the little copse of trees and scattered over the area. It was like being hit with a handful of dried rice at that range.

But I doubt the politicos and locals will be that rational.

Right now, maybe bottom line is money and budget stuff.

BTW, providing meat from culled deer etc is a big production. There are a LOT Of regulations on butchering, storing, delivering and handing out that meat.

From first-hand experience, regulations make culled meat for hungry a difficult task.

On one hand, you do want regulations and protecting public health. On the other, sometimes regulations are really onerous.

I live in goose-hunting central. They get a bright gleam in their eyes when the season starts, and spend their mornings in predawn darkness and freezing temperature, squatting in a small camoflaged boat, waiting for the geese to arrive.

Sorry to yell but non-migrating Canada geese are completely unnatural. We have tens of thousands of them in Denver and all they're good for is filling our park lakes and grassy areas with goose shit (and they do it a LOT) and they're also a traffic hazard. At first I thought it was very cool to see them so close. Now I just wish they'd go away like their wild cousins.

Geese aren't going to be like, "Oh man, that's where a bunch of geese got killed. Let's not move in there!" But dogs WILL keep them away.
