"I Want My Country Back"
I was listening to Glen Beck on the radio and this self identified sixty two year old woman from Seattle said she "wanted her country back"... Back from whom I asked myself President Obama won the election and the Democrats won both the Senate and House. I might add that President Obama won by a much larger margin than his predecessor and he actually won the popular vote.

I just think it sticks in some folks reptillian brain that a biracial or African American man is president.

Rant over...

A barrier is in tatters but white men still control the levers of power.

3. I hear "I Want My Country Back" differently.
I never liked Buffy the Vampire Slayer much, until I saw a live "shadowcast" of its musical episode, "Once More with Feeling," at a convention. This phrase "I want my country back" echoes it.

In the story, Buffy Summers, once a vital fighter against evil, has lost her spirit. She had died and been resurrected, but misses the peace she found in death. She steels herself against a coming battle, forced to face her loss of spirit, and sings...

I touch the fire and it freezes me.
I look into it and it's black.
Why can't I feel? My skin should crack and peel.
I want the fire back.

I don't think that lady was specifically racist or traditionally racist. I didn't get that from that brief quote mentioned. She sees things aren't progressing. She sees this nation going to Hell and not enough being done by anybody, not Obama or the Republicans either.

She wants more than her country back. She wants optimism, improvement, a better world created by the people of this country. She wants the fire back.

And frankly, so do I.
